I just received a very nice silver aluminum flake theater screen for the free theater I've been running for the last 9 years. Wonderful, since I have matched XGA native projectors and good filters, I can now do nice 3D on a 25' wide screen. Well, in theory I can.

Several months ago Philp relayed a message from Peter about BluRay and the Stereoscopic Player. At the time, the only way out would be to copy the BluRay content using AnyDVD HD to the hard drive, use the Haali Madia Splitter for the audio, and play from the computer. ASSUMING I can get content (which is going to be a bit problematic) in BluRay, is there any other solution in the next month or two? I schedule that far ahead, and I just don't know what is out there. I contacted ArcSoft and also PowerDVD 10, and have not head anything back about dual projector support off of blu-ray. Suggestions please!

Content is also a problem. Samsung is still trying to market players by keeping content like How To Train Your Dragon 3D in bundle only format, and Disney is only releasing 2 titles for now, but to be honest, this is not that big of a problem when I only show 1 film a week, and 3D will probably only be once a month. BTW, my theater licensing says I have to OWN the content on media to show it; no loans or downloads or rentals. Again, suggestions please!

Peter is still working on it and an Open Source
MVC codec. Meanwhile there is a program to convert
them to side by side format at forum at

An update of sorts. Cyberlink did get back with me. They support 2 projectors... for 3D DVD. For 3D Blu-Ray, they don't think it will work.

ArcSoft has NO PRE SALES SUPPORT. They told me to download the demo and that it's fully functional. Well, I couldn't see where you even get to pick a display; it's all detected automatically. I think it's very unlikely (unless someone with both ArcSoft AND dual monitors our there want's to try this) that it will work.

Peter is going to be the only game in town for a while, and then only off a disc drive.

Well I would use stereoMovie Player, it can also only read files, but you can download nearly all movies as matching files as you're not the only one having that problem. StereoMovie player is free and the dual monitor (= Dual projector) support is quite good with one of the best explanations and example configurations i have ever seen in a help file (Theres a separate chapter about it).

http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stvply/index.html

I don't think there will be legal problems if you really OWN the movie, just put the BD as a dummy in your drive, they can tell you to own it, but not in which format you convert it for playback.

Update count (thanks Fronzel):

ArcSoft: Blu-Ray direct; yes, dual projector..no
Cyperlink: Blu-Ray direct; yes, dp, doubtful
Roxio: Blu-Ray direct; yes, dp, later
Stereo Player: BR, file only, dp, yes
DDD: BR, file only, dp, yes
IZ3D: BR, file only, dp, yes
StereoMovie Player: BR, file only, dp, yes.

I finally got the hardware together. Yes, I can find and download (in some long period) rips (and get notified by Comcast the next morning that I am violating my contract with them for internet service and may be penalized) as one way to work. Since I already had what was required to rip a Blu-Ray, I gave that a try. AnyDVD HD may be fine, but I used DVDFab HD which is freeware and never expires. It was happy to rip Monsters vs. Aliens 3D Blu-Ray, BUT, what to rip to? Peter suggested to Philip taking the m2ts file, but he didn't tell what to rip it TO. My first crack was to rip the 2 large files to seperate AVI's, assuming one is right and one is left. Probably not the best idea. 17Gb each. It may work, but it's not effecient. Can someone point me to a guide on how to properly (and effeciently) rip a 3D Blu-Ray to be then played by one of the above programs? I only need XGA resolution as that is the projector native. I lean toward the free end, StereoMovie Player, but would work with DDD or IZ3D if it's substantially more convienent. Suggestions?

Larry

OK, this looks like it is working, and a whole lot easier than most of the other 'conversions' from Blu-Ray 3D for computer to dual projector.

First, most (if not all) of the programs that can output dual projectors from computer really want to see an 'm2ts' file. Not only that, it has to be un-encripted. Most people seem to like AnyDVD HD. I used DVDFab HD, which is freeware and never expires. How do you know WHICH M2TS file to save (the program finds 15 or more in in Monsters VS Aliens 3D Blu-Ray)? Well, PLAY THE MOVIE with Power DVD HD or any other Blu-Ray player that tells you what 'chapter' is playing. I use the term 'chapter' loosely; as an 'anti-piracy' measure, most DVD's & Blu-Rays today actually start playing on some obscure 'chapter'; wait until the actual movie is playing and note the chapter. This is the one you want to save; don't worry, it's the whole movie except the FBI warning and previews. Close PowerDVD HD, and open DVDFab HD (HD Decriptor). Wait until it detects. Pick the appropriate region code (it won't affect the code stored on the Blu-Ray player--yea! I can rip other regions!). On the left side, choose Blu-Ray Ripper. Then under 'More' choose 'M2TS'. Now, turn on ONLY the 'chapter' that you found on under PowerDVD HD; make sure the others are off. I turned off the subtitles too after the chapter was selected; I have no idea how they work in 3D. Press start, and pick a folder with plenty of space. A few hours later, in a sub-folder labeled AVI you will have a file. The file played in what looked like correct 3D under DDD (Triple D), but I have not tried it under other programs--yet. That's potentially a problem; DDD can 'convert' 2D to 3D, but I was using the freeware demo and don't THINK I have it on--it's not obvious. Anyway, it looks like this was a LOT easier to do than I thought. I think it worked correctly.

Comments and questions are welcome.

Now I have to find a copy of 'How to Train Your Dragon 3D Blu-Ray' that I can afford.... I scheduled it for two weeks from yesterday.

How to train your dragon is way too expensive imho as its one of the newest. if you want good and affordable BD3D, then get Monsters Vs. Aliens, "Cloudy with a chance on meatballs" that one is very cheap, "Monster house" - or Coraline (WARNING: Get BD3D not A Blu-ray which has the anaglyph 3D version). If you watch ebay closely for the cheapest Blu-ray 3d on "Buy it now" you get an impressionw hich one is "New and valuable" and which one is like 10 dollars.

I have sent you an email with a site that has backups of various BD3D as well as already converted versions. Whats best for you depends on your software and maximum resolution. If you have double 1080p you prolly wanna stick to BD3D if you can playback these or their conversions fine.

For XGA (I think thats 1024x768), 720P is already "over the top", i have a rip of "How to train your dragoN" in 720p that looks gorgeous on my new autostereoscopic screen which also has XGA res. my new favorite is "Bolt", epic 3D and very cute characters and story. The kids are gonna love both.

I already bought Monsters vs. Aliens; that's what I used to check the system. I know how expensive How to Train Your Dragon is; the issue is I run a 'free' (to the patron) theater; I pay up to $300 US to show some films (ones that aren't out yet); it's a money sink, but it's a 'ministry' to families in the area. For films that are in release, I have to OWN the film (DVD, Blu-Ray) to show it under the license. So I will have to pay big $$$, but that's the plan. }}

Wow, Larry so you are one of the guys pushing ebay auctions for some Blu-Ray 3D up to 300 USD... XD But i think it's cool that you have so much dedication, i mean like in a few month these discs are worth like 20 bucks... The local kids are really lucky to have such an enthusiastic Operator. But secretly - "How to train a dragon is really worth it". I already watched it 4 times in 3D and it's never getting boring... =)

But i also love "Bolt" and "Cloudy with a chance of meatballs". I hope "Despicable me" will also come out soon. I havent heard about a BD3D release of Pixars "Up" which is definitely a pitty - great movie in 3D.

About my autostereoscopic screen - it's an old "3D.com" (The domain has been resold like 3 times already, no use to look it up) screen. It supports "Frame Sequential", "Field sequential", "Side by Side" "Top Bottom" and features not only a standard D-Sub (VGA) input but also dual S-Video and Dual Chinch. I really learned to love this device, especially 3D gaming is much fun, Playing "Armed Assualt" "Fallout 3" and "GtA 3" in 3D really made me get into these games again just because its cool to see it all in 3D. But the screen is also cool due to its amazing design which offers a "good 3D" view from nearly every angle, just unlike my old Sharp RD1-3D laptop which only offers 1 "good" and 2 "halfway acceptable" sweet spots. On the Sharp laptop if you move your head for just a bit the 3D is "lost", on my §D.com tft it is nearly impossible to find an angle that is "Not 3D". Too bad these screen were only sold in small quantities in Japan - I have never seen that model anywhere outside Japan. Especially the many accepted input formats make this much more valuable than the "A few grand" Newsight screens that are simply normal Samsung screens with this lenticular overlay glued onto it...

You misunderstood; There are licensed video I pay for to the producer for $300 for a single showing; I don't get to keep them. They aren't e-bay. I've never paid more than $35 for an e-bay film.

The low priced films are shown under seperate license without real advertising.

Wow 300 Dollars and you dont even get to keep the movie? That's really alot. But as X-Mas is coming close maybe a screening of good ol' "Polar Express" would be more affordable? Thats really a good family movie for the X-mas season and with lovely 3D of course...

I'm still crossing thumbs that "Nightmare before Christmas 3D" will make it to Blu-Ray, the 2007 3D remake really looked gorgeous. Unfortunately it was only shown in 3D cinemas, not released on any media afaik...

Where do you find all those titles? I've only managed to get hold of Cloudy with a chance of meatballs and Monster House, and I'm waiting for a dance film that I just ordered because it was 3D.

I wish they would stop making those exclusive deals and release all the movies on the open market.

I agree Geir!

A bit of reality check here; 2D info first!

I have run a free theater, up until now 2D (except for a few very rare poor quality Anaglyph nights) for 9 years. I've shown 440 features in that time. It's a free community or family theater, (www.friendsfamilytheater.com) run in an older church building. That means that most features that are readily available on DVD or Blu-Ray can be run under a yearly license without additional fee (AND without any public advertising...) from an organization called CVLI. When we have our Drive-In each summer for 8 weeks, we DO advertise (flyers, radio, etc.) we have to pay for licensing from the producer of films. It may be as cheap as $25 for a Veggie Tale, or as much as $300 for a single showing of say, Amazing Grace. Some producers say, hey, it's free, show it free :-) wonderful! But some films really cost $300 or more for one showing, quite a few are about $90, like 2 I will have before Christmas. Usually these are NOT in general release, i.e. you can't buy them at all on DVD or BluRay. On occasion we even get a premiere; we show it while it's still in regular theaters, of for a small film, we are the very first showing. That's what we have done for 2D films.

Now we have the great new 25' wide screen (real easy to scratch too folks :-( ). We have 2 projectors, circular polarizers, glasses, etc. I set it all up Saturday; it worked well. Content is the issue. Blu-Rays still have to be ripped (no player yet supports dual projectors from the disc) for me to play them. Yes, I bought a number of the titles out there on eBay, mostly Samsung or Panasonic exclusive BluRays, which are pretty expensive, but I own the titles, and can show them (without advertising) under the CVLI license, legally. But expensive is not as bad as buying a license for some films I show anyway. It's more palatable to me than to others. I haven't had to pay more than about $35 US for a 3D Blu-Ray yet. That's steep, but it's not $300 or $90. I hope that makes sense. If you don't have to worry about licensing, there is online content of people who have ripped every 3D Blu-Ray on the market if you look hard; I need to actually own the content in one form or another. Oh, and I own everything that's family on 3D DVD that there is now too. Running a theater has some benefits.
