I've just watched Friday the 13th part 3 (Region 1) in 3D and I have to say that I was impressed with the 3D in this one. I'm not a big fan of the anaglyph method but I do understand that it is the cheapest and most effective to produce en-masse. So, forcing myself to put on the glasses and risk a headache or worse, bloodshot eyes I started to watch in trepidation. My first reaction was....wow. The 3D looked impressive...great depth of field and the colour balance was pretty good for anaglyph. A few shots in particular were amazing. Apart from the par for the course 3D sticky-out object moments, of which there were many, I was more impressed with the depth of field shots. At one point, a woman, after hearing a noise, climbs up into the attic of a barn and as we look down the steps at her ascending, the feeling of depth is amazing. I have several 3D DVDs as I'm a big fan but this is one of the best I've seen in the anaglyph format.
I hadn't seen the film since it's release date back in 1982 and TBH, it was a lot more fun and even creepier than I remember, aided especially by the 3D effect. Although the killings were gruesome, by todays standards there was minimum blood and gore, which was a relief for this viewer.

when you watch it without the 3d glasses, you will see that most of the images are horribly aligned vertically, resulting in nasty eyestrain.

On top of that, the opening credits are in 2D!!!

Blech! Can't recommend!

You're right Rrrob.
In retrospect, I just got over excited at the rare release of another 3D film.
I've tried making a field sequential version of this and it comes out horrible each time. As you mentioned, the alignment is off. I believe that it's aligned over/under and one of the sides is zoomed/cropped differently too which doesn't help. Also, the 3D side has a ghosting edge throughout the film which refuses to be aligned in more than one consecutive scene. If I watch it again, I'll stick to watching the anaglyph version which is probably the better, although by no means perfect, way to view it.

i guess they deserve credit for TRYING, although most of these anaglyph releases tend to get blasted by the general public for headaches, etc., even when they are done well...

Anybody know the story behind 3dunderground closing up shop and not accepting any new orders?
"A truly successful cinematic accomplishment inevitably results in the absolute compulsion of the viewer to discuss the film in question with one or more others for the duration of at least a good fifteen minutes, subsequent to initial screening".

No, it's not actually disclosed on his website, as far as I can tell. He never actually explains why, just lets everybody know that he won't be offering DVDs for sale any longer, as far as I can tell. I can understand if its a touchy situation and he doesn't want to openly disclose all the details on the site itself. I just wondered if anybody here had the reall skinny. Even if he has to stop utilising paypal, he could still accept money orders and checks if he wanted to, couldn't he? Maybe he's just a little burnt out on everything after all the paypal nonsence?

Here's the most that I can find on his website, copied and pasted verbatim:

"We are sad to announce that Paypal will no longer be a payment option for our DVDs and soon no DVDs will be left to buy.

We are currently removing our Paypal shopping cart and "buy it now" buttons. Please note, this is a bit of a tedious process. We hope to complete it in the next couple of hours one button at a time.

When this process is complete, we will sell off our remaining stock by accepting checks or money orders from U.S. residents only. We are very sorry for the inconvenience this causes for our international buyers. We realize you may have a lot of questions, and we intend to answer all of your questions as time permits.

Please know that www.underground3dmovies.com will continue. However, it will likely serve a different purpose than selling rare and previously unreleased material. Keep checking back. We are really just beginning!"

"Basically Paypal don;t allow the sale of non original commercial discs."

Hmmmm, very interesting. Does anyone know why PayPal suddenly "got religon" concerning unauthorized DVD sales?

If the movie studios which own the copyrights on the involved movies were concerned about the sales, the studios would be going after eBay and the sellers' websites -- not the banker.

Found some info on the "current status" portion of the site:

WHAT HAPPENED
"When I first posted, I posted the entire long story about what happened. If you feel the need to know the details, e-mail me and I'll gladly fill you in. Basically though, here is what happened:

Paypal limited my account until I removed the Paypal buttons from my site on items they felt violated their acceptable use policy. I disagreed that the items violated their policy, but repeated appeals on my part were denied and for that reason, I have removed the buttons to avoid closure of my Paypal account."

WHAT NOW?
"Although this all came as a bit of a surprise and was a frustrating process to work though, I've had mixed feelings about it over the last few days. My original purpose in starting this site was to have a hobby for myself. What I wanted from the beginning was to find other 3D enthusiasts and build a collection of 3D movies for myself and others to enjoy. In that way, the site has served it's purpose.

I never imagined maintaining this site forever. I knew there would come a day when it would be time to shut it down and move on. After all, this is an INSANE amount of work! So, when this all first happened, my initial response was "well, I guess the time has come to shut the site down."

Paypal has been the driving force to making these movies available. I thought as soon as I took the buttons down, the orders would stop. However, I have gotten a FLOOD of e-mails from many of you asking where to send the check for more! (and I will get to every e-mail. Please be patient with me) I also received several orders from Ioffer.com (I've now pulled my DVDs from there voluntarily... sorry guys. I don't want my Paypal account getting shut down).

With all this said, currently here is my plan(though this is subject to change):

I may be wrong here, but I'm guessing that the flood of e-mails is from enthusiasts who just want to put in that "one last order" before the site goes down or it changes. I plan to accept checks, money orders or Western Union for a time until the orders dwindle down. Then at a date in the near future (TBA) I will be pulling my DVDs from the site entirely.

I realize there are other payment options out there and I COULD continue the site exactly how it is with but just with a merchant's account, Google checkout, or something else. I'm quite sure I won't be doing that.

Although I go back and forth on this, I'm fairly certain it's time to move on. Don't worry though. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I plan to maintain this website and use it for 3D related purposes (of course!)

I have a few ideas already which I'm very excited about. I won't go into detail, but let's just say the site will maintain it's original purpose- to connect 3D enthusiasts together and to get 3D material into the hands of those enthusiasts. I'm always open to other suggestions as well though."

ORDERS AND E-MAILS
"When I announced Paypal was being taken down and our site may be closing or changing, I was NOT prepared for the response! So many of you put in "last minute orders" that I literally could NOT keep up! I have spent every second I've HAD since then filling orders. I did not have a moment to BREATHE!

With this said, I managed to get every single order out the door and in the mail today with the exception of 2 orders that were paid by "e-check" in which case I will send when the check clears. If you are in the U.S. you should have received a confirmation from USPS and if you are over seas or in Canada, you should have received a personal confirmation from me.

If you did NOT receive a confirmation, please let me know. If you are outside of the U.S. it could be something as simple as that I overlooked sending the confirmation. However, according to my records, every single order made it out today (for the first time in the site's history I had to make SEVERAL trips to the post office to accomplish this!)

As I mentioned, I have well over 100 e-mails (and counting) to answer. I plan to spend the next few days answering each one individually. If you asked something like "what happened?" I will answer you personally to say hello, but will then direct you here as I would be answering e-mails for the next 6 months if I wrote this out to each person who asked :-)

Please be patient. I know a lot of you are waiting to send checks etc. I am actually out of a lot of stuff right now due to the order volume I experienced over the last couple of days (it was about 2 months worth of orders in 1 day!)
I am restocking, rearranging and reassessing. If I have not answered your e-mail yet, just know that it will be answered soon."

THANK YOU
"On a personal note, I TRULY appreciate all of your support. I've read every single e-mail I've gotten even if I have not responded yet. I'm overwhelmed by the kind words and support that you all have given!

It's really been a great deal of fun and an amazing journey maintaining this site and meeting so many great people! Keep enjoying the 3D. I'll continue to keep this page current if any updates occur. Keep in touch!

Thanks again!"

I wasn't being sarcastic at all at the ending last bit of my above post. I really do like this guy. And I think he's handled this entire situation with impeccable dignity and decorum. Doesn't stop me from being extremely bummed about not being able to procure DVDs from his site, however...

I think he should host 'em all as downloadable torrent files and rapidshare links, thats what I'd do, just make the whole shebang a free service to the 3-D fan community, no reason all that time and effort should go to waste, those films going to do him any good just taking up space on his hard rive and coleecting dust on his bookshelves...

These puppies demand to be seen! Put 'em all out there, man! Unleash them upon the world! He wouldn't even have to keep seeding 'em, these suckers will multiply...as is the way with such things of this nature. Can't keep the genies in thier respective bottles forever...

Let 'em live, man! Its time to set your babies free, and let 'em fly away from the ocnfines of that birdcage. Post 'em 'n' host 'em, anywhere and everywhere, that's what I'd do...
