that's not verbatim, but E dimensional made a quote to that effect.....how can that be possible

woudln't something have to be FILMED FOR 3D in order to have decent 3D effects?

I'm getting some e dimensionals for my PC, with the attachment..i could use the same glasses if i had an attachment for another medium right? (IE DVD/Playstation2)

Jack:
So-called 2-D to 3-D converters that claim to turn flat video into stereoscopic images are a rip-off. These programs use algorithms that assign depth levels to objects within the image based on the degree of horizontal motion. The assumption is that the faster an object appears to be moving, the closer it is to the front of the screen. (Unfortunately, this isn't always the case. Imagine a forest scene with a train moving in the background behind still trees. The visible portion of the distant train will be placed in front of those trees -- a rather bizzare image, indeed.)

All of your shutter glasses should work interchangeably with your media, provided that they can all connect together (same type of plug for wired glasses, or if wireless, for their IR emitters).

So while 2-D to 3-D sucks, i could use my glasses very well for viewing both true 3-d pc stuff, and true 3-D TV stuff?

The answer is yes, provided all the physical connections use the same type of plug, and for 99% of the currently available shutter glasses this will be true.

2. is the 3D on playsation2/xbox etc. anygood? beacause...i mean in the end it's through RCA plugs right? can those convey proper, bad ass 3D info? or is it crappy like on the 2D conversion of movies?

1. "if i have the e dimensional set up for my PC: can i view special 3D DVDs (on my PC)?"
Certainly, if you install a stereoscopic DVD playback program like Peter Wimmer's Stereoscopic Player. (For details, go to the www.3dtv.at website.)

2. "is the 3D on playsation2/xbox etc. anygood? beacause...i mean in the end it's through RCA plugs right? can those convey proper, bad ass 3D info? or is it crappy like on the 2D conversion of movies?"
I don't use my computer for gaming and have no idea what the video quality on gaming playstations is like. However, the video quality has nothing to do with the type of plugs used. (The vast majority of all video cables end in some type of RCA plug.)

3. Before you ask: Wimmer's Stereoscopic Player will playback both standard (field sequential interlaced) and Sensio 3-D DVDs, but don't waste your money buying the Sensio version. Sensio DVD's won't play on your television without a $3,000 converter unit, and despite the advertising claims, the Sensio image quality isn't any better than that of field sequential DVDs.

regarding the sync boxes that convert 2D programming to 3D: I thought all that unit did was take portions of the screen and set them back, while pulling others slightly forward...I don't think the unit actually does any complicated algorythm calculations based on screen movement...I assume this is why the unit has the different settings (i.e., the video game setting, where the center of the screen is set back and top and bottom bands are brought forward, because the center of the screen is usually where things happen in the distance, while your score, fuel, lives, etc., are typically displayed in the bottom or top areas of the screen).

You're right that different 2-D to 3-D video conversion programs use different methods. I'm not specifically familiar with the newer units designed for games.

However, several years ago when the first (horribly converted) 2-D to 3-D theatrical movie DVDs appeared on eBay, the conversion method had definitely used a motion algorithm, with depth placement based on the degree of relative motion. The results were so bad (Note the "train in the forest" example I gave in my Dec 8 post above) that the movies were essentially unwatchable unless the 3-D view was switched off.

I've also seen some faux 3-D conversion programs that simply move the ENTIRE image a bit forward of zero parallax, and what they actually present is a totally flat image that appears to be floating in front of the screen -- but no real depth within the image.

Yes, that last example--Superliving 3D! The Kiss Me Kate short often found on compilation DVDs is done that way (simply taking the entire frame and setting it back or bringing it forward). And it amazes me how many people buy this crap on ebay (usually from Australia) and leave glowing feedback! What a shame all of this garbage is out there--probably turns a lot of people off!
