Hi guys,

Is there any way to convert an anaglyph 3d dvd (spy kids 3D and Shrek 3d) to proper format for use with 3d shutter glasses?

Thanks,
Kim

Hi Kim,

There is, but it ain't always easy and it can be VERY time consuming. Your best bet it to buy them if you can - Spy Kids 3D is available in both field sequential and sensio, both versions can be viewed with shutter glasses using Peter Wimmer's Stereoscopic Player - the field sequential one can be played directly through a standard DVD player into a shutter glasses controller box, if you have one (I can recommend www.cwonline.com - they have several 3D titles available and their service has been excellent for me). As for Shrek 3D, I have done my own conversion, it's not perfect, but it's a damn site better than anaglyph. I might be persuaded to part with a few copies, I'll have to get a new DVD writer first though, mine's packed in! Chris.

ChrisC007,

I suspect that several 3-D movie collectors on this forum (including me) would be interested in your field-sequential version of Shrek 3D, assuming it's of reasonable quality and price. Will you be posting more on its availabilty later?

Thanks,

Sorry it's taken a little while to reply, very busy at work in the run up to Xmas. I have ordered a new DVD-RW drive, but it won't arrive until after xmas, so I should have some copies available in January, by which time I'm hoping to have Freddy's Dead and Amityville 3D both completed as well!

Kim, firstly you will need to rip the full colour 2D version to your hard drive, then rip the 3D version as well, use Virtual Dub to remove the red from the 3D, use 3DCombine to "repair" the 3D version, then use something like Stereo Movie Maker to combine the two into field sequential 3D. It's a LONG process, but worth it in the end (3D combine takes an age to repair the anaglyph, and my PC is VERY powerful).

Keep watching this space, I'll post a link to a 10 second clip for you to download soon.

Chris,

Is the remade field sequencial (as viewed by the ELSA Revelator) THAT much better than the anaglyph version (im talking in particular about Shrek 3D) with red-cyan glasses to be worth the time converting? Or is it just as good?

Thanks!
Kim

Kim, I'll get back to you with regard to which filters to use, can't remember off the top of my head which ones I use, but there are a lot of different ones that will do the job - I think even some of the filters that come with VirtualDub will let you cut the red.

So far as quality is concerned - I would say that the final result is SIGNIFICANTLY better than anaglyph! - It's almost as good as the HQFS titles that you can buy such as Spy Kids 3D, Santa vs. the Snowman and the Imax 3D titles! I tried uploading a clip onto my ISP's server for people to download, but it kept getting deleted (either something to do with copyright or file size may exceed maximum allowed). I'll try again shortly and post a link if successful.

Hi Chris,

Ok, i've ripped both 2d and 3d vobs into avi files...and removed the red channel from the 3d avi (leaving me with an avi with only b/g shades)...I assume, i have to repair it with 3dcombine so I can put the red channel back (but this time NOT offset unlike in the original anaglyph where the red part is offset to give depth)...but what file do I use in the left side of 3d combine? the 2d rip? won't this produce two avi's with the same point-view (both right frames) and thus when I combine with Stereo Movie maker, will not have any 3d info?

Thanks for the input..
Kim

I don't know much about this but maybe he wanted you to remove some of the red tint not the entire channel, then use the now normal colored video for one eye and the regular or cyan (seems like some removal could be used here too) video for the other eye removing the offset then creating a line sequential vid where the offset will be recreated by the flicker in the glasses rather than the color. I don't know what 3dcombine is needed for, seems like you could just split it and put it back together without repairs, but I don't understand what you're really doing in the first place.

Merry Christmas to all - here's a little gift - I finally managed to get my clip to stick. Go here

www.christopher.cowie.btinternet.com/Shrek3Dhqfs.mpeg

to download. Please bear in mind that this is quite blocky because I had to really compress it down to download it - the same clip with little compression was over 50 megs!

Kim, if you put the full colour 2d in the left side and the g/b part of the 3d in the right side, make sure you use the "repair anaglyph" filter, what 3dcombine will do is take the red from the 2d and place it where it should be in the g/b, creating a full colour right eye view - the result is far from perfect but, like I said, it's much better than anaglyph.

One other thing. Once you have done the above you should have a decent copy - however, there are scenes where the left & right don't line up property vertically - you're on your own on this one - this can be a little more tricky and can be very time consuming to do properly.

Hello again, just an update for you. I have received my new DVD writer and am able to burn some DVDs. However, as I mentioned earlier, I noticed that in quite a few places there was eye strain suggesting that there was an alignment issue - there is - Big Style! I'm now starting from scratch and resizing and realigning the frames (which in some places is a frame by frame process). I've processed around 4 mins of video so far and the difference is stunning - even viewed in Anaglyph format it looks much better than the original DVD!

Can anyone who is interested in obtaining a copy please let me know ChrisC0007@yahoo.co.uk, the more people who are interested the bigger the price reduction!
