Hi, new to 3d here, and would really appreciate some advice on my setup! I have a benq mp721c that I hope to use for stereo projection with a nvidia card. After hours of browsing I still can't work out which wireless glasses/transmitter would work with this setup. If poss, I need it to be relatively cheap as i need to be able to buy multiple pairs of glasses (it's for an art installation in a gallery).

Is there any way of using the new 3d ready glasses (e.g. the Samsung ones) with a standard (non 3d ready) projector with the vga output from a nvidia graphics card?

If not, anyone else got any ideas about what glasses I could use?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Well we don't have any direct test of the mp721c, but the Benq MP720P was tested by Uncle bob and got a good stereo-3D review. Uncle bob described it as "brilliant" and used it with the nvidia 'beta' 93.71 drivers.

What glasses are ideal for you, your hardware and your software deppends a bit on what you got.

Basically shutter glasses don't differ much from their specs, so which one you finally get does not matter too much, it rather matters what nvidia drivers and card you use.

If you use XP with the 93.71 nvidia "beta" stereo drivers you will get virtually everything running fine, if you have a newer nvidia card and newer drivers the possibilities become a bit smaller.

There are tricks to get the 177.79 nvidia drivers working with SOME of the old stereo 3D modes with loads of tricks and hacking. I personally made very bad experiences with them, never had so many problems, resets, freezing and blue screens in my whole life as this one afternoon where i set these up. I had wanted some field sequential modes which you can clearly forget. Other users that ran frame sequential (pageflipped) modes had more luck - and this is what you want for your shutter glasses.

I was most pleased with the IZ3D drivers, but i only used them for field sequential modes - however, everyone talking about these used pageflipped, so these might be a good substitute if you cant get the nvidia drivers working. The downside is that the IZ3D drivers cost 50$, are bound to your hardware (New PC means paying again) and there's no "cracked" or "warez" version of this around. I hacked mine though which works fine for me.

If you get the original nVidia NVision shutter glasses you get best support and even recent drivers for them, but they are imho usually overpriced. If you can get them cheap on ebay then get the nvidia, otherwise just buy some generic 14.95 USD shutter glasses, it's not like any of these has some secret space age technology, shutter glasses barely changed within the past 20 years. Some fancy models offer wireless but usually suffer from having the batteries empty at the worst time, bad reception - and honestly: Unless you dance in front of your TV while watching a video you most probably wont care about wireless.

The "new" "3D ready" glasses are a scam. really they are. They are the same shutter glasses as all the others, all shutter glasses since 1988 are "3D ready" and they are really all the same. The scam here is that all the big players got onto the snake oil train and now sell their crappy TVs from last season as "3D TVs" by throwing a ten dollar shutter glasses into the box.

Hi, that's great advice, thanks.

Actually, the presentation is for an art installation that needs to be viewed by multiple people, so I'd prefer wireless ones. What I need to know is if I get wireless ones do they come with a transmitter that plugs into the VGA port?

If I did decide to use wired ones, can I use more than one pair at once (daisy chain them?)

Also, I think the drivers don't matter too much to me, as I'll be writing my own openGL code, and I can switch view each frame in the code. Does that sound possible, or is there some other signal the nvidia card sends out specifically to sync the glasses?

The only thing about the 3d ready glasses is that they seem to be significantly cheaper than the other wireless ones...

I really appreciate your help by the way!

Afaik E-dimensional is the only company still actively producing "industrial" long-range wireless shutter glasses for VGA input.

As all wireless shutter glasses kits come with radio or infrared transmitters the number of glasses you can "connect" is unlimited. However, in terms of shutter glasses keep in mind that "industrial long range" models mean around 20 feet of maximum distance (!!!!). Normal wireless shutter glasses usually stop working at around 10 feet.

There are glasses for every price range. I suggest looking at ebay with "3d wireless shutter*" as search term or something similar to get a good idea of how much the prices vary. Remember you just need one transmitter for the type of glasses, so ask the seller like "Hi I am interested in your set with 2 glasses and transmitter, can you supply 12 additional glasses", most of these guys are pros that will gladly offer a better deal when you buy some additonal glasses. Which model you finally choose - Budget or Deluxe - depends on your requirements and size of purse.

keep in mind that many of the offered glasses are only for chinch/S-Video input. Xbox/Wii support generally means no VGA input. if they don't write anything about VGA then they dont have VGA. Or just ask the seller.

Also keep in mind that you can't mix brands, so an nvidia transmitter can not be used with e-dimensional glasses and vice-versa, so stick to one brand and one seller, then you dont have any problems with signal compatibility (none of the brands are cross compatible with others)

Great, will do thanks.

Let's say I buy edimensional, what do you think about bypassing the drivers and sending out my own frames?

The problem is I'm not wanting to actually project 3d, I'm in fact sending out possibly unrelated material to each eye! So I need to generate the left and right frames independently in opengl. If I don't have 3d enabled in my nvidia drivers, will those frames still be delivered to each eye alternately? Does the software which comes with glasses do anything special that would stop my manual approach from working?

Thanks again!

Well if you program it properly and your program is not too slow (Frames out of sync!!!) that should be possible. But it would probably be very enduring for the viewer, if you display "garbish" (in the means of 2 unrelated pictures) or get out of synch the viewer usually quickly gets headache simply as our brain does not get the information it expects and kinda tries to adopt to it. You might have people getting sick or even seizures if they are very sensible to this. I really recommend you try this out on yourself and a few test persons before you let the public view it. If your glasses come with software or drivers you will need to refrain from installing these or they might try to override your refresh rate or do other funny things. But it really depends on which system you buy. General thumb rule: if you use your own programs to control flow of frames - hands off the drivers/Software. For e-dimensional only soft you might want to use is "E-D Activator" which simply turns on/off the shutter glasses via the remote transmittor.

Yeah, disorientation is the point of the whole installation... the two halves are not out of sync the whole time. Sick or seizures would be a sign of appreciation (I'll put a warning up though obviously). Okay, I think I'll go for the edimensional. Thanks for all your help.

You're welcome. Let us know how the installation (or testing) went. And be sure to watch some 3D movies with the projector in your spare time, i found "Jaws 3D" an excellent waste of time in 3D.
