Hi all,
I have the opportunity to purchase the remnants of a "Total Recoil" Arcade setup. They do not have the stand or the original computer but they have everything else (basically all the guts without the computer), as well as the Multimedia Distribution Box, two Visette 2 HMDs, and a lot of non-descript cables.

Now I have been hearing a lot of different things about these but nobody has given any reviews of the optics of the Visette 2 model. Now I know the FOV is supposedly great but I am still a little concerned with image quality. I do not have the ability to "try before you buy" so I have to kind of jump in here.

Now I am not really an avid gamer and would most likely try data visualization or things like that. I do not expect this to be great for the newest DOOM (thought the Winchester 101 shotgun replica is in the lot and I want to try to hook it up and see what kind of kick is really has and its pointing accuracy :-).

Anyway back to my main question. What are people's opinions here? We are not really taking money here (though this is under $1000 US) if I push aside the peripherals for a second and just focus on the HMD can I get an HMD with the same FOV with BETTER resolution than the Visette 2 HMD (remember I get two head sets in this lot) for around say $700? Also please note that of course these are dual input VGA stereoscopic...that is important to me to get if I can.

I know people were saying they really like the Visette Pro, how does this compare? Would you say today’s I-glasses and glasstrons would be better all around? I am just looking for opinions and first-hand experiences here. I have been lead to believe that the Visette 2 HMDs are still a pretty good contender for today’s HMD market, was I mislead?

Thanks for any advice you can give!

-Josh

Josh, i'LL add alittle seeing I had a Visette2, They were good when they came out, but for our needs NOW, they are in no shape to do an average job. I tried quake and it was hard to see real good, the screen is a good size but the Res is under 360,000 pixels. The new Visette is a contender but not the older ones, maybe for the games they were designed for.. :) With Z800 the screen is a pretty good size, it doesn't have a good shell as a Visette. Make sure you might have a market to sell to if YOUR not Happy.. My 2 cents.. Good luck.

Uhm...that does paint a different picture...

I guess the real issue is how many pixels do I need? Like I said I am not an avid gamer. While I would like the shapes to be smooth and colorful I double I will NEED that much very fine detail... This is similar to the first couple i-glasses units in the way of # of pixels (around 307k), correct? I was hopping to produce some simple interfaces with OpenGL myself and learn about how to make stereoscopic calculations/images and such. I certainly do not expect a full windows/Linux desktop that is usable like a giant monitor. I guess I was trying to look for immersion more than screen size.

I guess I lack experience...I am used to my Xyberview but that is nothing like this!

KuDawg, could you perhaps provide more information about how the color looked, was the image washed out, was the HMD not comfortable to wear, did it break often, or easy? Did everything look Ok accept the edges were jagged? I think I would benifit more if you could perhaps give me some additional examples and more information on how images looked on it (was is like trying to view a digital photograph on a 256 color screen?).

From what I understand about OpenGl the limit of resoltuion only really affects my viewport and display of detail when objects move away from the near plane. Perhaps for what I was thinking these kinds of specs would be OK?

Ah the Helmet is quite comfortable, a very solid visor. Im not sure if you have tried another HMD, but don't think you will get what you monitor can do not even at 640x480, thats what you will have to play at. If they are in good condition and you are getting 2 plus the extra stuff then it might be worth working with if you spend no more then the asking price, I also saw there was a intersense tracker, track 30 I think.
I would just stay away from it but I remember people telling me the same thing but I still bought one, then sold it shortly after hahaha..Your eyes are used to smooth seeing objects and nice colors. This could and will cause a strain on the eyes because of the FOV and the lack of res, I know others can add better info then me but this was my opinion,as I to was hoping for more. Try it out, if not im sure you might find Cyberminds or ArcadianVR buying them used....:)

Fair enough...

I was going to check if they were Pro versions so they would be higher res. If not...yeah you are right, better to let it go.

I have the Visette 2/Pro and it will output at 800*600, but I am missing the power supply for the Multi Media Distribution Kit so I have yet to try it with a computer game. I did buy it for that exact reason to play a FPS and incorporate head tracker to fully immerse myself in the games, but not having the power suppy or the correct voltages sorta dampened the project. I would say go ahead if you are getting the Visette Pro/2 models, they were very sturdy and I didnt find the display to bad, but then again I have yet to hear from anyone who has used it with a Quake/FPS , but it would be good for dev purposes.

Josh-

The headset is probably a Pro version. The SU2000E was 640x480, standard VGA. The rest of it is most likely not much help. The tracking is provided by a proprietary interface to a Polhemus Insidetrak board. The MMD box is used for the input of VGA and PAL composite video. I will be happy to help you out in any way I can. I figured someone would post here after that auction ended......

HMD Display Video 3D Pro
Has anybody tried the HMd Video 3D Pro advertised by I-O Display Systems or know an independent review of it ?

Is there any hardware adaptor to use page-flipping stereo 3d with a Visette?

Hi,

I designed the optics inside the Visette 2 many years ago for Virtuality when the only available colour displays small enough were limited resolution Sony devices. The key aim was to get the widest field of view - never mind the resolution - in order to kick in the brain's ability to fool itself that it is in a real 3D world when the field of view goes above 80 degrees. That was the in thing then. The optical technoloigy wasn't up to the job so we stuck with moulded aspheric plastic lenses at 60 degrees. You should find that the device gives excellent resolution with a bit of colour fringing out to 60 degrees width but then loses quality in the corners of the picture.

If you want to see a raytrace of the eyepiece visit www.lensdesign.co.uk, look under capability and then virtual reality.

Any comment gratefully received as to the quality / non quality. As an optical designer it is very difficult to imagine how the optic performs in real life when it is just a set of computer optimised numbers.

The maths in the design was so complex that the US patent examiner couldn't understand the design.

Any ideas on what the future should hold?

Ian,

I assume you're referring to the Visette Pro optics. I'm pretty sure the Pro used Epson displays, not Sony. These are the same displays as in the older Virtual Research V6, which uses glass aspherics to achieve essentially the same FOV as the Visette.

The V6 lenses have somewhat less chromatic aberration, less distortion at the image edges, and a bit larger exit pupil. On the downside, the glass optics are considerably heavier.

I did a lot of side by side testing back in the day.
