A few months ago this thing was all the rage on this discussion board...is it for real, will it ever ship, etc. They claim to have been shipping these since CES what...3 months ago? The website still says a 3 week shipping delay. Has ANYONE, besides those that work at/for icuiti, tested and/or bought one of these units? Or the other unit that was supposed to do 800x600 (forgot the name)? Any progress on either of these units or has everyone just given up because the products are yet again vaporware?

If you doubt they are shipping, why don't you go to the Icuiti site, put a V920 in your basket and give them your credit card number. The website says nothing about a 3-week delay as you claim.

Or, go to the SkyMall site where they are also selling the V920.

Here is an independent user review (as far as i can tell anyway ) of the Icuiti HMD. Doesn't sound so hot to me.

Posted by: Shane Williamson | January 11, 2005 01:08 PM

Just got myself the pair of icuity V920. Expectations are met. The device is consumer oriented, with poorely designed battery compartment. Plastic joints that are easy to break and cables that would probably rip within a year. I'm taking the liberty of resoldering the device to extend the longevity.

My vision is not 20x20, so it was very nice to find separate focal adjustments for each eye, which is not a unique feature when it comes to head mounted displayes. This one; however, does not let you control separation between the displays. The divise is buit for an average person. Works better for those with eyes close together.

The manufacturer tried making the gadget as light as possible, yet it still feels heavy on the nose.

The device works best with standard video output (RCA). Console games look awesome, as they are initially designed for low resolution and limited color depth.

VGA output takes the device capabilities to the test. Flickering becomes apparent. Color is not as clear as it looks even on cheapest desktop LCD displays. Contrast is low. Visually I'd compare it to 300:1 LCD's. The resolution is capped at 640x480 and the reftresh rate at 60Hz, which means you'll either have to run Windows 2000, or have a resolution management utility such as "Multires" for XP. Don't know how it would work with Macs.

The projection size - it's small. I wear the device on my nose and the picture is smaller than the 17-inch display I have sitting on my table about 2ft away. I'd say it's an equivalent of about 15 inches diagonally. All that is not so bad, considering the resolution. Pixels are hardly visible. The size/resolution ratio is tolerable.

The eyes do get tired after about 15 minutes of use. 5 friends that tested the device confirm it. Refresh rate seems to be the reason.

I haven't tested the stereoscopic capabilities just yet, but will be happy to share my discoverise with you.

In addition.

The glass surfaces catch reflections and interfere with the picture. The glasses dont cover the eyes completely, so it is possible to be involved with other tasks, such as typing on the keyboard without taking the glasses off; however, the level of immersion takes a hit.

In a dark room, even a slightest speck of light causes irritation. I find myself more comfortable working in daylight. In bright surrounding light low contrast of projection also becomes less apparent.

The last but not least - sound. The headphones that came with the system are practically useless, the sound quality is poor and the fixed placement causes great discomfort. Fortunately, they're removable and the decoder box has a headphone socket. The only disadvantage to using other headphones is that you'll have to wires running from your head instead of one. The amplifier transmits some of the power supply static onto the soundtrack, so the less additional volume boosting you do, the better. Batteries are the best as they provide continuous direct current. AC adaptor converts alternating current into direct and that produces some nosie. When used with an otionap USB power cable, the amplifier starts picking up all the internal static of the computer and the noise lever becomes intolerable.

The battery lasts 4 hours, as declared. The green power light on the device starts flickering when the juice is about run out. The shutdown is not imminent. First the screen flickers, then after about 10 minutes shuts down, which gives enough time to shut down the computer, or whatever the output device might be.

Conclusion

The quality could've been better, but for the price the gadget, I wouldn't expect anything more. Lots of room for improvement. Good value. Nice competitive product, which is, essentially a toy.

In a time when everything comes with a display of such kind, I can hardly imagine a situation where a person would have a device capable of generating a signal and not being able to output it.

For "on the road" movie experience I would recomend a portable DVD player or a laptop.

So what is the device best suitted for? Showing off! Isn't it obvious?!

Bull!

I tried to buy a V920 on 05/03/2005 and this is the email I got when I ordered it.

"Thank you for your recent order for one of our new and exciting products.
Unfortunately due to overwhelming response at the recent CES show, we currently
are backordered 3-4 weeks. Please rest assured that your credit card will not be
billed until shipment has been made. We will make every effort to get your
product to you as soon as possible.

Please feel free to contact us at sales@icuiti.com or 585-240-8000 if you have
any questions about your order.

Again thank you for interest in our products.

Why would anyone buy this toy when you could buy the Z800 3d HMD from eMagin? The Z800 offers: 1. uses OLED displays with true stereo 3D, 800x3x600 resolution, 1.6 million pix, and a 105-inch virtual screen at 12 feet, 2. has a built-in head-tracker, 3. has a 40-degree diagonal field-of-view, 360-degree horitontal if you include head-tracking 4. has a 200-to-1 contrast ratio and is flicker-free, 5. has excellent built-in stereo sound and noise-cancelling microphone, 6. runs completely off of USB power.

For the $899 price, you can't beat the Z800. Nothing even comes close. The Z800 is a SERIOUS piece of equipment, not an expensive TOY like the V920.

I would say I like V920 better. See, it is not fully developed product. But it seemed to me that the improvements are ongoing. I like its small size; it doesnt have to look fancy. in broader evaluation, v920 is better for the price you pay. I think eventually they will make the product much better in near future. I do researches as well in other fields; the progress goes just like that!

"Why would anyone buy this toy when you could buy the Z800 3d HMD from eMagin?"

That's a tough question to answer, since you CAN'T by the Z800. You can pay for it, I suppose, but does that really count? According the web site it won't be for 30-60 days.

"Nothing even comes close" is quite an exaggeration.

105" @ 12' is 17" @ 2 feet. The Icuiti review says it's a little smaller than 17" at 2 feet.

The Icuiti reviewer estimates 300:1 contrast, eMagin claims "> 200:1"

eMagin: 800x600
Icuiti: 640x480

eMagin has the head tracker, Icuity does not.

And the eMagin costs about double what the Icuiti costs ($900 vs $500). For the price... only you can decide whether it's worth it.

But neither one of them is currently shipping. Maybe Icuiti should get bonus points in that department though, as they have shipped at least one unit so far (to the reviewer above).

why do people keep saying Icuiti is not shipping the V920? I have one, and I had no problem getting it.

I noticed the review in January, must have been one of the first units off the line. The headphones are not fixed, they are flexable, you can bend them to any shape, and they sound better than any in-the-ear ear buds that I have.

Also, there is no buzz or static of any sort in the audio.

Why would 640x480 in 3D be bad?, maybe brand new games but go try glquake or darkmasters quake work. I still use in 640x480 with shutter glasses and it's still cool. If you could get your hands on a V8 which is still being sold for $10,000 im sure you wouldn't mind. Why is it though they use 920,000 and seem to get a 60 FOV?

The real glasses supporting 1024 x 768 wont be out until the middle of next year. Both models are only sport a 26' fov. My money is on the emagin glasses which are 1024 and fov of 40'. I only wish they had the design and ergonomics of the icuits.
