I have the razor3d virtual fx 3d converter.
My question is, if i do the projction through depthQ or any other single lens projctor and use the Virtual fx as emitter, can it work with wireless glasses or special glasses and emitters are required?
I wanted the cheap solution for emitters and wireless glasses for 50 people watching at a time to work with the projection system.

For 50 people exist no cheap solution ...
You must use dual projector and passive system or high ANSI Christie DLP. DepthQ or similar device even with high gain screen can work for 20-30 people O.K. , not for 50 (belive me, i had doene A LOT of stereoscopic screenings).
For 50 people you will need in addition special high-range emmiters anyway (in $400-$650 range) ...
I thing a passive system ($8500 or so) can be the best price acceptable solution for 50 people.

If 20 to 30 people watching at a same time, can razor3d virtual fx work with the projector?

I am not interested in passive projection. The cost is going very high.

So please let me know the cheap solution

I am not familiar with razor3d system. I can tell you that InFocus DepthQ in combination with hig-gain screen and eDiamsnional, NuVision or Stereographic glasses wil be O.K. for 15-20 people. I mean 2 m big screen, gain about 1.8, total darkening.

Can you give me the perfect solution for that? For 50 people you suggested the polarized pasive projection. Please give me the split up of what actually required and for 20 to 30 seater also as you are doing many streoscopic projection

Thanks

Raj:
I am doing passive projection for 40-60 people.
I am doing active projection for 15-20 people.

Any good solution (I do not speak about realy good solution required for profesional presentations) will cost you al least $5000.

Are you ready for a setup in this price category ?

Raj, if you want to make the setup yourself, you shoul buy following components:

Passive setup for 40 people:
- 2x2400 ANSI DLP projetor (we use ACCER products)
- dual projector stand (find some on eBay for neglible price)
- stand for 2 polarziation filters (Berezin www)
- polarization filters (Berezin or standard fotographic filters)
- realy good screen material (SilverFabric or Stewart), do not do compromise - this is the esential quality factro
- made yourself holder for the screen
- PC with Quadro 1000 FX card (this will save you headake with in window stereo, the OpenGl stereo is the only one relay stable output method)
- DepthQ Server or Peter Stereoscopic Player

Acctive setup for 15 - 20 people:
- InFocus DepthQ
- screen material with high-gain (any one)
- PC with Quadro 1000 FX card (this will save you headake with in window stereo, the OpenGl stereo is the only one relay stable output method)
- 15 or 20 CRT eDiemsnional glasses (old CRT model with high-range sensitivyty)
- Y box making connection of 2 IR emmiters to PC or preferably an eDimasnional high-range emmiter
- DepthQ Server or Peter Stereoscopic Player

The costs of both setups is close ...

Passive setup will have folowing disadavntages:
- aprox 1-3% ghosting
- havy and hard to adjut
- with the cheap projectors it is impossible to get good image overlap

But it will work for more people with cheap glasses ...

If you do not want to complete the setup yourself
and you are located in Europe - my company can take carea about this as weall as about individual componentes supply. Contact me directly in such case.

I am located in India and here there is no awarness of 3d right now.

I will be interested in any of the projection but the easy method. I wanted the mobility of the project to carry to the diffrent location and easy to fix up the things.

I wanted this solution for school educational programes.

Hi Raj,
Actually there is good awareness in Bombay and Delhi.
We have done quite a few successful events there.
unknown to many there were at least two 3D films released in India in the last year (Anaglyph).

One was by Creative Eye.
We also sponsored a programme to teach young kids a primer about filming in 3d in Delhi.
http://www.bluemangofilms.com/young-moviemakers/index.html

Where in india are you located? and if you need PC based Shutter glasses, or autosteroscopic solutions let me know.

Regards
Clyde

I am also trying to decide on how to show stereo to about 30-35 students. I like the idea of useing the DepthQ system, but I want to buy expensive wirless glasses and a high power emitter which I understand can now be purchased from edimensional.
How much can cheap wireless glasses be bought for? I have students that do not take care of equipment. I thought seriously about a passive system using polorid glasses but the DepthQ system uses page flipping and not interlaced video so you get good flickerfree quality and also I gather less ghosting than poloroid. I read that the DepthQ projector can be bought for $3495. Where? I see it for sale for $5500 at Sterographics.com bundled with 3 very expensive crystal eyes 3 glasses($795 each)In the past I used wired sega game goggles. That was spaghetti wire hell. Then I used wireless googles of VRex but a throw of only 12 feet. I do not want to mess around with aligning two DLP projectors and having to buy and expensive demux. If I can get good sturdy wireless goggles and a good high power emitter then the DepthQ sounds really cool, buttttt..... If you have 3d video movies then you can not play the movies straight from the DVD player. Nope, you need the DepthQ server or the Peter server speaking of which..... Where do you get the Peter Server? To make matters more complex and convoluted, I am also looking into autostereoscopic displays. And in case anyone thought I was finished yet... Will the DepthQ server take seperate video sources form two cameras? I want to use two lipstick cameras. I want to do HD video and I am trying to avoid bying really high end Ikegami HDL-37 or 40 cameras. Any suggestions outthere? I want HD Quality. Also I need these cameras genlockable with a black burst generator for syncronization. If I decide to go interlaced, can anyone suggest am inexpenisive multiplexor?

Scott, Sorry for the rushed reply..someone else will fill in the blanks but here you go...

1) The DepthQ can be got from Lightspeed (the company that created it) www.depthq.com or they will at least point you to the right place.
also try www.inition.co.uk

2) Edim glasses work great with it, but emitter is not so strong, so seating of your 35 students is very very critical.

3)Peter's stereosocpic software is free for non commercial use and im sure you'll get a good price for an educational installation.
http://mitglied.lycos.de/stereo3d/

..You didnt even bother googling it did you! :)

4)Autostereo displays are our area, but dunno if its what you want, as multiview autostereo content is hard to generate
(Sharp and other 2 view lentocular autostereo might just work tho)

the basis for all you want to do could be:
a) get a decent PC - PIV with 1 gb ram,and builtin DVD player, Nvidia Card (FX series should suffice to start with)

b) lipstick cams will work, in that case use Peteres stereoscopic multiplexer.. more details on the same site in teh link above.

ok thats all for now...
Cheers
Clyde

Hi Scott

The current price of InFocus DepthQ projector is $3995 not $3495. The $3495 was only an "itroducing price". You can buy it for the $3995 directly from LightpseedDesign (www.depthq.com) or in Europe from my company (www.gali-3d.com) for 3450 EUR (without V.A.T.). The higer price on EU market reflects tranport, customs payement and extended guaranty time required by soem EU countries.

Just some more answers on your quetsions:

eDimesnional glasses works with the projector O.K.with the standard emmitor. The range is about 15 feet. Price for one piece of galsses is $50 ... Such setup is O.K. for middle sized audience when the IR emmitor in optimal position.
High range emmiter for eDimesniola galsses will eb avialbe during 2 months (we work on development in cooperation with ED) ..

DepthQ server with addtional componet coled DepthQ Mixer can on the fly preview data from 2 cameras (fireware, USB1 or USB2) ...

We do not support playback from 2 separated files
- this does not work O.K. from performance and sync. reasons in principle.

DepthQ Server in HD resolution can play up to 2048x1080 source, do if you need HDTV solution you are on good adress.

If you are located in Europe, my company is ready to help you with putting togehter a complete solution fitting your needs (projection system, camera system e.t.c.)- E-mail me directly.

I was participating on InFocus DepthQ projector development and I am the main coding specialist supervising the DepthQ Server software development - so I belive I have the qualification to help you.

Thank you M.H. and Clyde for so much help. But as this is a yet growing field, I am sure you will benefit later from the help you give, as you enable more people to get involved in stereoscopic solutions.

Like people who posted earlier, I was looking for an under $10k solution and got many alternatives (which is good!). I am buying in US but I live in Peru. Please orient me with my findings:

Requirements:
- Intended for 3D video and 3D CG animation.
- 20-30 spectators (6 seats x 4-5 rows)
- Night Darkness or Dimmed low ambient light (like for normal 2D projectors of 1000-1400 lumens)
- (Rarely) Mobile setup (to be installed by various people).
- Preferrably rear projection (is better if my public cant see any equipment).
- Screen width of ~2m for 4:3 or 16:9 videos (80" x 60" or 80" x 45").
- Preferrably WXGA resolution (but SVGA 4:3 is acceptable if there are no other cheap alternatives) and best if native 16:9 aspect ratio is supported.
- Must be able to reproduce videos made with 2 HD/DV cameras OR 1 camera + the NuView camcorder adapter (is it any good? or NuView interlacing tricks have impact on quality??). I work with video, so there is no problem if I must convert from interlaced to progressive, etc. But I need to EDIT the 3D video.. never did that before, however I think is not a complex technique.

1. Active Setup
- DepthQ projector (~$3995). Does it cause noticeable DLP rainbow effect?
- DA-LITE Wall Projector Screen (with Da-tex Surface ~$728 on www.shophiq.com).
- Long Range Viewing Equipment for Stereo Projection (from eDimensional ~$495).
- 30 LCD shutterglasses from io-Display partners (like eDimensional, ~$50 per pair. I saw cheap ones on http://www.i-glassesstore.com/h3dsystems.html but I dont know if they work with the IR emitter from eDimensional).
- Do I miss something? Maybe DepthQ Server? In which cases would I need it?
Estimated total: US$6718 + shipping ... not bad and stuff is of acceptable quality I guess.

2 Passive Setup.
Here I see 2 alternatives: Using DLP or LCD projectors. I got a nightmare of choosing best quality/price projector.. still not sure which to choose.

- Does the contrast ratio have high impact on my configuration? I see so big variations... from 400:1 to 2000:1! Which contrast ratio is just enough for my setup?

I will post my passive setup as a seperate new message :)

Roman Nique.

Hi Roman
For 20-30 people will be better to use
passive projection, especialy if you do not need higly portable setup. To maintian 20-30 shuteglasses will be not easy. Generaly if you have no experiences with 3D proejction it will be beter to let some specialized company to make a complete setup ...
It is not only about right projectors , it is about overal optimal setup geometry, proper lense system, filter system, screen materail quality, mirors system simplyfing the rear projection and a lot of other factors you do not know if you have never done this ...
I am sure you can do the working setup yourself - but the results could be sub-optimal.
Based on your location I suggest to you to contact my colegues from Lighteseed http://www.lightspeeddesign.com/ and request a complete solution.
It is a pity you are not in Europe - in this case I will be able to offer some complete solution myself.

Well, it is true that an experienced team will do a better and faster job than a neophyte, but it isn't all that hard to get a decent result. One solution that works very well for us is:

- 2 x Dell 3400MP Projectors (DLP, 2000 lumens each)
- Silverfabric screen 3.2mm x 2.4mm
- Imax polarized glasses ($2 per pair)
- Single PC with dualhead nVidia card in span mode at 2048 x 768

This setup works very well and has been used at Siggraph, the Annecy Animation Festival and many other places to show 3D movie content to audiences up to about 50 people. It has been extremely well received and brightness has never been an issue. The big advantage of the SilverFabric screen over e.g. the Stewart is that it can be rolled and shipped multiple times without showing significant deterioration.

The total cost is under $8,000 exclusive of setup labour.

Er.....

obviously the screen dimensions are 3.2m x 2.4m. I originally wrote it in mm, decided after the preview to change it to meters, and forgot to change the unit! (Blush....)

(As then we could edit our posts with our afterthoughts instead of having this messy three-posts-in-a-row business :p).

I note that Dell has recently reduced their specification for the 3400MP to 1500 lumens "Based on ANSI/NAPM IT7 .228-1997 tests of 55 units, April 2005, with average ANSI Lumens 1384". It was rated at 2000 lumens a few months ago. Whatever the rating, they are bright enough for 30-50 people in a theater environment.

The good news is the price has gone down by $1,500 for the pair so it is even less than than the $8K I mentioned before.

Hi Alatar,
I've been interrested in this sort of setup for quite some time but never gotten around to invest in it. I have a couple of questions about your setup:

* Which nVidia card do you use and are you able to run games with that setup? I have tried a few setup modes with the drivers I have, but in span-mode I can't run overlay on both screens, and I haven't tested the recent stereo-drivers with dual-screen output.

*The projectors you use seem good although the noise-level seem a bit high. Does this bother you at all, and would it in a normal living-room?

thanx

Currently we use 6800 Ultra's but this is because of the very high demand on the image-generation side of the app, not the display side. I've tested with 4200's, 5200's and 5500's, they all work fine.

The apps we use with them are all custom-written and use a single desktop in span mode. As a result, I'm not really able to say very much about how they work with nVidia drivers / gaming. I did, as a very early test, get the nVidia stereo drivers to work, but didn't spend any time tweaking usablility.

The noise level is fine for group projection in biggish rooms: I haven't tried them in anything smaller than about 6m x 5m.

Sorry not to be more help. :(

Alatar
