I'm pondering whether there's any point on installing the nvidia 97.95 stereodrivers for my 8600 gts, or will it not work and I best make my old nvidia 6600 computer stereo-enabled?

Go to meant to be seen 3D (www.mtbs3d.com). Register. Download the 162.xx beta drivers for both the card and 3D stereo. They work with the 8600.

installed it but when I try the test app or medical image I get around 10 seconds of waiting and a BSOD.

after reading this thread:
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=235079

I came to the conclusion that the best way is to use the old computer with nvidia 6600 which I will be attempting tomorrow.

You used matching (162.5) drivers? You did the registry trick (the last poster at the guru3d site listed it)? Mine worked perfectly.

yes used both 162.5 forceware and stereo:

162.50_quadro_winxp2k_english_whql.exe
StereoE16250-[Guru3D.com].exe

will try again tomorrow just in case. Btw I just uninstalled the old nvidia drivers from add/remove programs- will using some special nvidia removal tool help? if so which one?

Yes, I did use a removal tool at one point. I don't remember which one; I got rid of it afterward. Do turn off both anti-spy and anti-virus before installing both stereo and the other driver.

1.uninstalled nvidia forcware and stereo
2.rebooted
3.cleaned the nvidia drivers with 2 separate programs. several dlls were left though I don't think it would have made any difference if I deleted them.
4. turned off firewall, antivirus
5.installed nvidia forceware
6.rebooted
7. installed stereo
8.edited the registry so that contextUIpolicy is 1
9.launched 3d medical thingy and image viewer- black screen followed by crashes
