It DOES look like a holodeck... maybe TOO MUCH. I believe it's just a video clip with a lot of visual effects.

right! ..this has nothing to do with any kind of
'air floating holographic 3d' or something, they just show how they track 3d-elements in live video footage in realtime! In other words, you can only see the '3d' on the screen and not around you..

I believe that a merge of this technique with 3D VR technique could create some pretty awesome experiences. Believe seeing your own hand inside a game holding and using a weapon for instance.

Hi guys

yup the technology is about inserting images/models into live video. This called Augmented Reality as opposed to virtual reality.

This combined with say emagine visor with a head mounted camera would give you private Lapdancers in your living room (or the Chippingdales if you are that way inclined), the super bowl (or FA cup) in front of you on your carpet, U2 performing on your mantle piece, you fighting Ali in your living room...

Now that is pretty cool, especially as you could walk around the object as you can see the camera's do in that video...

Its just another step along the road to a real virtual space.

The limitations at the moment being Optical FOV, resolution and the mechanisms to produce images for the eye without clumbersome equipment.

Google "Augmented Reality" for some of the core science behind this.

Another good one is "Computer generated holograms". I was caught up in the fact you could make simple holograms by scratching surfaces and thought using a similar method it would be possible to generate them on the fly using a computer...

Alas someone is already there and have already transmitted holograms... Simple models at the moment very much like those pictures you see of first TV pictures but cool nevertheless.

Its happening folks, its happening

Very nice. Now go place a virtual object behind a real one.

Scratch holograms: http://www.amasci.com/amateur/holo1.html

There's a "little" problem with them... it's impossible to animate them!
