I have it on good authority from a friend at CeBit that the price point for the Leadtek X-Eye will be around 477 Euros.

Finally, a decent HMD for the masses.

By the way does your friend know whether its for the monocular or binocular versions?

http://www.emagin.com/pressreleases/pr_010604.pdf

Not so cheap if its for the monocular as the binocular version must be more expensive.

###Finally, a decent HMD for the masses.

I wonder if it will be mass-produced at all.

They refer to it as "wide view," but it still only has a horizontal FOV of 32 degrees. Leadtek needs to take a cue from the Olympus Eye-Trek model with the 16:9 display. Then they could get wider FOV without pixel distortion or making the image too big for practical PC use (like putting your face too close to the monitor, which is not good - big FOV can't make it unusable as a PC screen). Then folks could watch letterbox DVDs and play first-person shooters with much fuller immersion, but still use the PC comfortably.

The 32 degree FOV of the X-eye is HORIZONTAL. Vertically it´s more like 40. It´s usually the vertical FOV that is measured (for instance of the I-glasses and the Cy-visor), that´s what´s confusing many ppl about the X-eye.

Lars have you actually tried one of these or is this what you have been told? I called leadtek and they said it would be 4 months+ before one would be released.

Horizontal 32° and vertical 40°???
That cant't be the case.
Horizontal 32° and diagonal 40° sounds more reasonable.

Oops, my mistake. Thanks for correcting me about the FOV. As for the releasedate, I have no idea. If Leadtek says 4 months+, that´s probably the case... sadly.

Spoke to their man in the Netherlands finally. He said that they are still on target for an end of May release in europe with a street price of $499 euros for the binocular version.

That's a sweet price for OLED stereo technology IMO.

Ray

thanks for getting the price for the binocular version...Do you know/your friend know who will be carrying it for sale?

I feel like being 'an early adoptor' in this case.

All the best

Does the frame around the displays cover your view completely? For example, can I see the keyboard or do I have to get a keyboard meant for blind ppl so I can feel which key my finger is on? :)

I'm currently considering the pros/cons of HMDs versus Monitors with Fresnel lenses on them...

FOV is not a problem.
We could hack it in a heartbeat.
When it comes to VR nothing is really good AS IS.

Cheers

Teemu:
You will most certainly still be able to see your keyboard if you rotate your eyeballs to look down. Very few HMDs (if any?) are THAT immersive. Looking at the X-Eye's design, it appears to be no exception - like that you'll have plenty of outside world visible above and below. Most HMDs simulate the same FOV as the monitor you're likely sitting in front of right now, so consider that when thinking of how much is visible around it via eye movement.

Received the following message from Steve on Oct. 13:

"The Xviewer will be launched in December in Asia with a release in the
States soon after. The website will be updated by the end of the month."

Because he's been saying " By this Christmas" for the last 4 years. They haven't been to any of the trade shows that he's said they will be, or have attended. I wouldn't buy anything from him or his s'posed company even if they did come out with the next great thing in HMD's. I'll wait for someone with a better track record to come out with something comparable. I just don't trust IIS at all.

On almost every imaging discussion group I visit, I see these eMagin trolls ruining the board. Please take your boiler room pumping somewhere else. This board is suposed to be a discussion group about 3D imaging.
