This is totally amazing, the movie posters alone blew me away - but this festival raises many questions. Where do the prints suddenly come from? What will happen to them after the festival? Will someone digitize and restore these movies for future generations? If they can do such a commercial festival, why can't someone do 3D-VHS and 3D-DVD's of these movies? Christoph | ||

There was a smaller (8 films?) 3D at a theater in Dayton, OH about 4 years ago. The prints aparantly are available if you know the right people. As far as digitizing these films, the Library of Congress has a list of what is being done and isn't, but I don't know that 3D is one of the criteria for the compilation. What I think you are asking for is to be able to OWN a digital copy of these... I agree. The fact that these festivals exist is proof there are people doing demographics on who might want to see them. I would expect an exit poll as well. IF (always a big if) there is enough interest, and with such multi-screen features as SpyKids 3D probably opening on 1,500+ screens this summer, we just might get lucky and get some resurgence. | ||

Prints are from many sources.... mostly studios and archives around the world. In some cases, a "left" print is from one source and a "right" print came from elsewhere. Many are "last surviving prints", and there are no usable negatives in some cases. Truly: This will be the only screening...ever...of many of these films in 3-D. As for video: These films are copyrighted and belong to the various studios. To date, they have expressed zero interest in releasing material in 3-D to the home market. Jeff hits the nail on the head, as most studios have little interest in expensive preservation efforts on a film technology that most studios don't see as being profitable. For any outside company or invidiual to make back-ups is a very expensive venture, and because 99% of these films are still copyrighted, any restoration would be under total studio control. Again, most studios don't see any potential viable profit in releasing these films in 3-D so it's a nasty "catch-22". By my guess, the LA 3-D film festival will show a little over half of the 3-D shorts & films that were made in the 1950's. Some are already lost. Make no mistake, this festival IS quite an undertaking, as I don't think there's been any 3-D film festival of this magnitude EVER. And given some of the prints and their condition, I am sure some will never be seen again. If you can attend this festival it will be a rare treat indeed. | ||

It seems to me a private company could work some kind of deal with the studios and have them keep the copyright and still preserve + release these films, no? | ||
