Is the quality good enough for large amounts of word processing/emails/programming? Any eye strain problems?

How do they work for extended use (of about 4-6 hours a day)?

I have no problem using them for applications. It's actually kind of nice doing homework lying down. As far as extended use, well it is not a helmet. The glasses are held on by a strap. It can become uncofortable resting on your ears. However, I've found that a little padding helps.
Four hours is no problem.
