Howdy folks-
I'm a Max newbie so green i don't know if 3D-izing, from 2D images is even possible. Take a photo of a sugar cube, with 3 visible faces. If one makes a cube in max, takes the 3 visible faces from the photograph and places these texture maps onto the virtual model, they'll distort. [a square image is needed for a cube's texture map]
Would love to hear from anybody knowledgeable about such things...

I know MAx inside and out, but I just don't understand your question? :)
You do know that you can manipulate the UVW coordinates so that your texture map fits the way you want it to. But it's always better to just find a better texture map, if all you have is a sugar cube in perspective, go and take a picture of a sugar cubr yourself, from the top....

I want to take texture maps scissored from 2D source pictures, figure out the 3D 'armature' that it implies/is a surface of, and stick the [uvw-adjusted] map onto this 3D model. From there i'd create similar texture maps for the parts of the 3D original that weren't visible in the original 2D drawing/photograph. Result, 3D-izing of a 2D original. My suspicion is that it'd be an enormous amount of work [or why haven't we seen it commercialized already?].
And by the way, be nice if we could start a 3D software forum here don't you think!?

I'm sorry, I must be really dumb! What you are describing to me sounds like creating an old common 3D model in MAX. How does that differ from a regular model?
You obviously need a texture map, from the original object, preferrably taken by you, and you need to model the object in MAX and apply the map acordingly. But like I said, that is the normal process you go through while creating a model in MAX. And I don't think that's what you want? For some reason?

And yes, it would be cool to have a 3D soft. forum, though I don't know how many post it would have, this board is much more VR Stereo vision hardware oriented.

Yes of course- the result would be an "old common 3D model". The point would be it was generated by copying/stretching/pasting its front surface from a 2D photograph. Imagine for instance you loved Escher's Drawing Hands and, 3D nut that you are, want to have it in 3D, for viewing at different angles. Only the result would be 'common'. Anyway i seem to be beating a dead horse- obviously nobody has done it, or [and this puzzles me a bit] or wants to... Marinus

I see now!
IT would be easier to build a model of the drawing instead of trying to do what you want....
Using displacement maps is the easiest way out, though sometimes it won't do what you want it to do.
So again, just model the drawing! :)
