Last year 3D-Plus tried to market a device that tries to create 3D information from the relitive motion of the blocks in a MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 data stream. Although the effort can be applauded, as our fearless leader pointed out, MPEG data is in BLOCKS not OBJECTS. How well the Blocks correspond ot Objects will determine if the information is at all possible.

Enter 2002. A new true object-based codec arrives http://www.eetimes.com/story/OEG20020322S0105, Read first, then think about it. Then go to (http://www.pulsent.com/solutions/index.html#objectbased). Pulsent is basing everything on true objects. Layer information, and probably scaling for distance is truly available. Vertical and horizontal. Can real (almost true) 3D be done in real time? I don't know, but I hope 3D-plus looks carefully at the Pulsent codec. I think this one might really work.
