Hi all!

I bought HL2 yesterday, and... it doesn't work with nvidia stereo drivers 61.77 !

Does anyone can play it in 3D?

I've been playing with the 56.72 drivers on a card (Quadro FX) that HL2 reports as DX8.

I made it mork briefly with 61.77 and the
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nv\Device0]
"D3DOGL_EnableConsumerStereoSupport"=dword:00000001

workaround from the "Juat cant get them working" [original mispelling] thread here; I had lots of artifacts, instability, slower framerate & even spontaneous reboots.

Maybe 61.77 is mostly full of stuff far cards newer than mine...?

Hi

Unclebob here.

Here is how to play HL2 in stereo, I take NO credit for this (apart from taking the time to cut and paste from another forum).

Thanks to Nobsi who sorted this out on the Sterevision forums.

Essentially you force the DX7 path and then re-enable the high quality graphical features.

So here's the skinny:

Nobsi :- Ok, I finally could optimize the 3D with the DirectX 7 render path to a level, where it looks nearly as good as the DirectX 9 render path. The only(!) things that are missing are the reflections of the world on water surfaces and high quality object shadows. But HalfLife in 3D is so much cooler, that I can accept this.

Ok, here how to do it via the ingame console:

switch to DirectX 7 level with the command

mat_dxlevel 70

This also sets most of the enhanced graphic options to low settings. So go to the enhanced graphics options and reset everything to high. Note, due to restrictions of DirectX 7, the settings for shadows and water reflections are ignored.

If you own a decent card, like a 6800, you can further enhance the graphic quality by cutting and copying the following lines to a (new) file autoexec.cfg in the ".../half-life 2/hl2/cfg" directory

cl_ejectbrass "1"
cl_detaildist "1600"
cl_detailfade "400"
mat_bumpmap "1"
mat_antialias "4"
mat_trilinear "1"
mat_picmip "1"
mat_softwarelighting "0"
props_break_max_pieces "-1"
r_rootlod "1"
r_screenfademinsize "0"
r_screenfademaxsize "0"
r_drawdetailprops "1"
r_drawmodeldecals "1"
r_drawflecks "1"
r_decal_cullsize "5"
r_dynamic "1"

This gives back all graphical beauty of the DirectX 9 render path with the 2 exceptions mentioned above.

Hope this helps everyone trying to do this.

All the best guys

Unclebob here again: Update from Nobis
improving his HL2 stereo config

Ok, I looked into this. Problem was my above settings are sub optimal

Objekt detail level is controlled via r_rootlod which must be set to 0 for high quality!

Texture quality is controlled via mat_picmip which must also be set to 0 for hight quality.

So here are the corrected settings:

cl_ejectbrass "1"
cl_detaildist "1600"
cl_detailfade "400"

mat_bumpmap "1"
mat_antialias "4"
mat_trilinear "1"
mat_picmip "0"
mat_softwarelighting "0"

props_break_max_pieces "-1"

r_rootlod "0"
r_screenfademinsize "0"
r_screenfademaxsize "0"
r_drawdetailprops "1"
r_drawmodeldecals "1"
r_drawflecks "1"
r_decal_cullsize "5"
r_dynamic "1"

Hope this helps

For ATI Stereo3d people this is how to do HL2 with an ATI card and the 3.8 beta drivers:

Credit to tolou

I can now conclude for the ATI audience, that like myself are more or less are stuck with ED. (ATI where are you??!)

To set DX level to 8.0 using 'mat_dxlevel 80' in the console is infact allowing me to fire up an ED 3.8 beta driver in HL2. After a while of tweaking and setting most grahical options to "low" I was even able to run at decent framerate(using 9800@pro).

Of course you are still subject to heavy rastering due to the over/under mode interlaced technique. But nevertheless, it works!

As an old NVIDIA stereo gamer, things are not really what it´s supposed to not using native page flip. Oh well, time will tell how to rectify this one...

Keep on fraggin´

All the best

I'm using version 71.84 drivers (both video/stereo), Athlon XP 2200+, 1 gig ram, GeForceFX 5600 Ultra, etc. and HL2 works fine out of the box.

Although I've noticed it not having a great deal of depth...
