Hi folks,

I'm trying to determine if my H3D Terminator hardware is functional. No
matter what I try, I can't get the wired glasses to flicker, nor can I
detect any output from the IR LED emitter (looking at it with an IR
sensitive camcorder).

The H3D "dongle" is connected between a Matrox Millennium II and a Nanao
T560i monitor.

The only marking on the dongle, aside from the logo, is a small label
with a barcode and the characters "000XA3". This was purchased from
i-O Display about 4 months ago (which makes warranty repair unlikely).

Brightland's H3DCtrl/H3DView (under NT 4) seems to do what it is
supposed to do as far as displaying the "color codes" prior to
displaying an image, in either interleaved or top/bottom, but the
glasses never seem to turn on. This was tested at various screen
resolutions and refresh rates. There was no documentation with the
program to explain how the H3DCtrl settings should be adjusted
("Frames"? "Gap"?) so all I could do was find settings that did not
produce the "Refresh Too High" message, set my VGA accordingly, then try
the H3DView program.

Ghazaly's H3DActivator crashed under NT, so I installed Win98 and tried
it there. Like H3DView, the software seemed to do what it was supposed
to do, but the glasses never flickered and the IR LEDs never lit.

The images of the H3D controller on this site differ from what I have.
Most notably, the connection to the VGA card is via a wire cable,
instead of the short length of circuit board shown in the picture.

Assuming this is newer hardware, is it possible it contains newer
firmware as well? Could my dongle be looking for a completely different
set of "color codes" to activate it?

Is it possible I need to fiddle with sync polarity, front/back porch,
and pixel count settings on the Millennium II to produce a signal the
H3D can lock onto?

Does anyone have any suggestions of things to try to get this thing
working?

Thanks,
Mike

P.S. - Sorry for such a long posting, but I wanted to give as much
detail as possible to aid in the debugging process.

(I hate replying to my own posts, but...)

At the time of the posting above, my knowledge was based on...

"Unofficial H3D/Wicked3D Eyewear Page".

I have since found...

"Unofficial i-O Display Systems Terminator & Cruiser page"

...which is infinitely more applicable.

I suspect my first problem is power, so as soon as I finish typing
this I'll be off looking for the VESA standard 15-pin definition,
and will have to solder up an appropriate cable.

The second, and worse, problem would seem to be the "i-O Display code".
My choices seem to be:

a) Spend money on a VGA board which will work with Wicked3D drivers
b) Wait for (and spend money on) the "Cruiser" or "Universal" kits
c) Write my own version of H3DActivator.

Since I'm short on both money and patience, the logical choice seems
to be c). But having to reverse engineer PIC16C54 things...ugh!

If anyone knows of any projects underway to create an "i-OActivator"
program, or any information on the current "color codes", please let me
know.

Thanks,
Mike

You should ask i-glasses.com for a VGA-keyboard-power-adaptor.
They should give this away for free to customers who run into this trouble.

Apart from that the classic H3D hardware and the new H3D-Terminator seem to be quite vulnerable. So your unit may be broken afterall, but check the power issue first.
