We've had a client drop us a VFX3D and ask to integrate it with a collection of work they're doing. Mostly it is Java3D, but OpenGL will also be in the future. However, they want to use it in non-MS platforms - linux/x86, Solaris/Sparc and possibly Irix. Naturally, they didn't give us any documentation to the device - just a collection of cables, boxes and the HMD.

Having done some fairly extensive googling over the past few days, I can't find anything at all - not even a technical manual. I've found the Win2K drivers and have it generating tracker output, but I just cannot get the device to show any screen content. I've written a number of OpenGL test applications under windows using various demo sources around on the net (including the one based on the NeHe tutorial) but just cannot get it to display anything. In fact, the pass-through video connector is not even letting the video pass through (yes, power connected to the box, although I get a light grey box from the backlighting in the HMD).

So, if anyone can point me to some decent technical documentation, it would be much appreciated! Even more appreciate would be documentation of the specific serial protocols being used through the serial port so that we can write drivers for non MS platforms.

The divice you have is faulty ...
It shoudl display at least your desktop image even without any software ...
It does not need any software activation - this is necceray only for the tracking system.

Some of my sample application well tested with VFX3D are on this link :
