Anyone know what the specs of it will be? From the IIS website:

Interactive Imaging Systems, Inc (IIS) announced today that it would be attending the Game Developer's Conference in San Jose California. IIS will use this opportunity to present its next generation Head Mounted Display (HMD) technology, currently under design. The new HMD is being designed for compatibility with the Xboxtm video game system and the PC.

The VFX3D was too expensive for the consumer market...(That's ok, IIS didn't intend it to be for the consumer market.) I would imagine that the next version will thus be more affordable. I would like to see something in the $300-$500 range.
How about the VFX1 with a bit better graphics, without the VIP card....hmmm....what do you say IIS give us a clue... :)

How about something under $1000, to start, that works with the PC and the xbox, full stereo, tracking, microphone, 40 degree FOV, lightweight, 800x600 resolution. Would that work? I'm not saying that's what it is, I'm just asking if that would work for you?

Steve: It sounds interesting. I am realy missing the microphone in VFX3D (I work on adding voice recognition based on Microsoft SAPI 5.0 to my VR codes) . Does xbox compatiblity mean standard S-VHS or composite video signal compatibility as well ?

No... no.. wait. Haven't you seen the graphics of Nintendo's GameCube? They are really beautiful, imagine playing Rogue Squadron 2 in full 3d, or even Wave Race: Blue Storm, ah, I missed Metroid in 3d. If every developer says that Nintendo is fairly easy to program for, then why not make an HMD compatible with the gamecube?

Hmm... Probably because of the graphics chipsets used. The Xbox will be using a Geforce3 chipset, so it stands to reason that a HMD for the PC could easily be ported to Xbox. Nintendo generaly uses proprietary chipsets.

Also, it's going to be easier to port PC sourcecode to the Xbox, basicaly just a couple lines would need to be changed, and the source recompiled. Coding for ANY "N" console is a lot more involved and specialised, considering you have to work with odd memory registers & such. creating stereo drivers would be as big a chore as getting the HMD to work with their chipsets.

Besides, after the Virtual Boy flopped, Nintendo has steered clear of stereo-capable hardware.

...Still, I for one would like to see Nintendo release a stereo-capable display of some sort for gamecube; Or how about some anaglyph titles for the Gameboy Advance? that would also be cool; Portable stereo gaming! ^_^

Well yes, I know its easy to put it on XBOX, but once more how difficult could it be to make drivers for the gamecube, I mean they use a chipset in which ATi helped, it uses polygons, z-buffer so it should be fairly easy. The problem is that in order to do this, one should get a development kit or the code for the graphics instructions.

Eric hit the nail on the head. It would be possible to get one for the gamecube and may be something that will be done in the future. It is a matter of Dollars at this point. Developing something for the xbox is relatively cheap compared to a whole new software initiative for the cube.

How clear will text be in the new unit?actually readable?even when in stereo?thats a big drawback on the vfx3d.try playin any game where u need to read an on screen menu

Readable text-- that's why it's important to get
game makers to sign on for development...something
as simple as making game text with a larger font--or an option for that could make a game title compatible with the new HMD.
