Hi again

recently i've visited a level for quake that was designed to be explored (not realy to play). it was a deathmatch level but without weapons or wealth items.
does anyone knows about more levels like this? for quake1 or 2, hal-life?
i'm looking for realistic buildings... like historical monuments, churchs, castles that exist (or are realistic).
i was wondering if i could implment a histiry class with this levels and a vfx1 :-)

Not sure about Historical real-time models; however, you could build your own Historical worlds or there is a game that may help:

To make your own models:

You will need a 3D editor-- and time to learn it:
3D Studio Max and about 4 months of 1 or 2 hours a day 5 days a week (There are some free editors available but 3D Studio Max is perhaps the most popular tool.)

You will also need a 2D image editor for texture maps-- Photoshop is the best.

You will also need to learn the ins and outs of real-time graphics. (Somebody else might have a good link for this?)

Check out www.planetquake.com for more info on the "mod" scene/ quake tools.

Go to www.3dcafe.com for free models.

Ain't got the time or money for that? The following may be helpful:

Timeline Studios, Michael Crichton's game company created a "game" called Timeline.

http://www.timelineworlds.com/

a blurb about the game cut and pasted from their site's FAQ area:
>
What type of game is Timeline?
Timeline is a first-person 3D action/adventure game that transports you back in time to medieval France. You play the role of Chris, and are part of a team of archaeologists excavating a historic region of modern day France. Your team leader, Professor Johnston, has mysteriously disappeared leaving behind an unexpected videotape addressed to you with an imperative request. Now you must travel back to fourteenth century France to rescue him. And the adventure begins...
>

Get your school to go for the VFX3D for use with that game.-- ("Timeline teams up with IIS to Provide Immersive Education" Steve, I see a PR opportunity here.)

(Steve works for www.iisvr.com, NX)

Hope that helped.

Man anon, could you drop it. I don't work for IIS. I'm a low polygon 3D artist/designer.

IIS is "virtually" the only surviving company working in consumer level VR. And Steve from that company just happens to participate in this forum. For a VR enthusiast who would like to see the industry move more quickly to maturity-- promoting IIS is a good thing. Also, this post has to do with an IIS product-- not who works for who?

I think a more curious question would be what's your beef with them? Give it a break.

NX would have appreciated some insight. Your post is useless to the thread.Yada. Yada. Yada.

Thanks VRone

anyway, here goes some thoughts...
1º there are lots of mappers (good ones)all around the world creating complex levels (some are REALY complex :-) for games like Quake, Quake 2 or Half-life (by the way is it possible to get stereo in a vfx1 for Q2 and H-L?).

2º Quake 1 and 2, Half-life are good 3d platforms: they support multiplayers, good details, "easy" map developing (easier than 3d Studio Max, no?), stereo3d, etc...

3º instead of developing futuristic scenarios (some have "i-wish-it-was-medieval" style...)why not develop virtual worlds (maps for games)with historical/realistic buldings?

the difficulty it's much alike the same... why develop a map that is supposed to be a cathedral or a cstle? develeop a REAL cathedral or castle!!!
imagine a deathmatch in real scenarios :-)) (if you're a player); imagine exploring the Notre-Dame of Paris cathedral (if you're a virtual world "turist"), imagine a virtual immersive field trip to a Portuguese castle :-)))))
anyway, why can't i get support for this??? it's a queite easy way to create a learning environment using distributed VR!!!!
you wouldn't believe the lack of support and resistance that my idea (i'm trying to do my master degree project in educational technology with a vfx1 that i bought :-)) has to live with!!!

Play the game, RUNE if you want to check out historical renedrings of icelandic/norse mythology and culture. Human Head studios did an incredible job at keeping things historically accurate. One of my hobbies is reading about early northern europe (I've read Beowulf twice, and some of the old sagas). Also, this game is one of my favorite for using with shutterglasses (not to mention that it has practically re-invented the deathmatch!!!)

it's great fun; I thouroughly reccommend it for history nuts, or fans of good-ol' fashioned hack and slash fun, with a twist!

I like icelandic mythology, all those sagas (eirik, the red; hen-thorir; the vapnfjord men, etc :-)
went to reykjavik once :-)
but's that not quite the same :-((
i want to work with an hmd.
RUNE can be played with vfx1?
know www.unrealty.com ?
it's almost the same concept. they are using Unreal engine to create virtual environments taht can be explored as a level of Unreal. I think it would be great to have tehe same for Quake/H-L engine.

Go to www.unrealty.net
They create real life buildings using a modified version of the unreal engine, so it has great graphics..
They have available for download a model of the notre damme, the international space station and a bank..
I have seen the notre damme model and its quite good...
It is 90% achitectonically acurate..
And you can see it in software mode, direct3d or opengl..
Everybody should give it a go, as it's only 10mb..

You can also import real outside landscapes and monuments, by downloading the dxf file and importing it into a game engine such as Unreal. I built some simple levels doing this. One for example is the Olympus Mons volcano on Mars. It is kind of neat to be able to explore this volcano using the unreal engine to render it.

I would assume that RUNE works with the VFX1, since the game is based off of the Unreal engine.
I know the VFX3D works with it, it wouldn't be out of the question for the VFX1 to work with it too. Rune supports many resolutions.

Wow cool software, to save others time...

Confusing at first. The software apparently doesn't come with any example maps. I downloaded the space station map, it's a zip file, extracted to maps folder, didn't work, after some fiddling found that double clicking on the unzipped .uloc file initiates the space station map to install itself. Hmm.. After that, the rest was reasy to figure out.

And i think i found an answer to one of my questions along the way. I've been looking for a decent HMD ever since i bought the Virtual IO original back in 94 or so. I saw a really hilarious picture on this website of a man with a monitor strapped to his face. Hahaha so i decided to try it or approximate it. Wow well that's what i was looking for- hi resolution, GREAT field of view, smooth motion. Shesh it's all there except for portability. All i need is a strap! So now the shift (for me) seems to be rearranging things to get the monitor and myself in a comfortable position. Can't get stereo with this setup, but wait now i have my eye 3d 4 in 1. Now for a motion simulator.. Sorry for the off topic.. I had never thought of putting my face closer to the monitor. Mabye i should up the health insurance now tho..
