Has anybody out there ever tried to connect a dual-monitor graphic card, playing a page-flipping stereo format this way:
"all even frames on one monitor (left eye) and all odd frames on the other monitor (right eye)"
In this way if I'd connect two LCD projectors instead of the monitors I'd obtain two different video (for the left and the right eye).
ANY SUGGESTION to make the graphic card work this way?
THANKS.

Hi Giorgio,

This is an idea that the Win3D company has been considering to add to the WINx3D stereoscopic library. It would be pretty easy. The application needs to generate a stereoscopic pair for WINx3D anyway. With this stereoscopic pair, and if the driver were written, two monitors could be used to display the pair.

Do you have some hardware that would actually use this? If so, you can contact me directly, so that we can discuss the creation of such support for WINx3D.

It hasn't been done yet with at dual vga graphics card (see previous discussion: "Stereo images with 2 standard projectors")

An employee of Metabyte/Wicked3D told me that they made a system working the way you (Giorgio) suggest with two voodoo2 cards. However, it would be nice to run it on one card only. Plus, the voodoo2 card is pretty old by now.

David, does your suggestion mean that one would be able to view all sorts of content in stereo on the two monitors/projectors? I'm thinking of Direct3D, OpenGL as well as above/below and interlaced movies. That would solve a lot of problems - and eliminate the need for expensive demultiplexers.

Such device will be very useful for another
point of view. There exist a very expensive
device for VR aplications coled CAVE.
The main part of this device are 3 to 8
stereoscopic big projections screens surrounding the observer. The price of this device is extremly hi (driven usualy by an SGI Pover Chaleng with
several InfiniteReality graphic cards) ...
I am almost sure that this device colud be build
for 1/10 of the price just from 2-4 PC with
dual stereoscopic output ....

No, David, I'm sorry - I haven't.
I was just planning to buy the hardware if I would get software support, I'm not a programmer.
We can speak about this.
Alexander, can we have more details about the two-cards solution?
In fact I was thinking about an OpenGL application in a multi-computer enviroment (something like what Husak suggest ...)
I hope to hear you again.
Giorgio.

A CUBE costs in excess of 500 000 US dollars while 2-6 PC needed for a better setup is 1/100 the cost. If you put in the NV20 due in 2 weeks on 1+GHz systems you would be better off.
The cube also has a sucky sound system...

All the metabyte guy wrote was:

"We have a glide stereo wrapper that can drive 2 Voodoo2 boards and output left eye image on one board and right eye image to the other board."

I've emailed him for further information. If he gets back to me, I'll let you know.

Alexander,
I hope you'll get answers.

Has anybody tried GLdirect?
Is it too slow or do you think we can use it for this purpose? (I aspect a bad OpenGL support on a dual monitor graphic card and I need page-flipping implementation at driver level / not all applications work in page-flipping mode)

I seem to remember, back in the day, the game, "Descent" had support for multiple monitors. You had to use a few command line switches, but you could, say, Have three monitors, and the same number of display adapters, and one could set up the monitors panorama-style, and have each monitor display a different angle; that way, you could position the monitors in such a way that you could look to your left or right, and see what wasd there in real-time, Sort of like a cave system (remember, Descent had stereo support as well, and IMHO was ahead of it's time in regards to tweakability)

Now, if more games had this feature, you could put together a "Mini-cave" if you will. Just reuse those extra monitors and PCI accelerators you find cheap at the local computer shows...

And you would only need the shutterglasses connected to one monitor (in theory) unless you were using a line blanker for interlace viewing rather than page flipping, in which case, you'd need an additional line-blanker for each additional monitor.

Multi-monitor setups are nice: Just make sure you know what you're getting into. They can create a lot of headaches ^_^

-Eric L.

BTW, why don't all you game programmers out there put cool features in the game engines anymore? the multiple display support, internal stereo code and other neat hardware tricks were always there for people to tinker with the games and maximize the gameplay experience in days gone by. 'Tis a shame it's like that anymore...

Hi Eric,
as far as I had understood you could set position of each monitor and the game openGL engine would generate appropriate data for each monitor ...
I'm just thinking about this but in stereo and using a WRL player.
Any suggestion about a WRL player supporing a thing like this?
Giorgio.

So, instead of page flipping why not just display each image continuously on the seperate cards? Then polarize each projector and use polarized glasses. Is this what you were thinking of doing, or did you want to do LCD shuttered page flipping? Seems it'd be more economical to use polarization, then you can have a large audience with cheap glasses. Can you get polarizing filters for ordinary projector lenses, or do you need special lenses? If so, do they cost a fortune?

Obivously you'd want to use an internally converged tube projector or LCD/DLP projector - something one only one lens.

Hi Mike,
please, tell me: do you know a way to connect 2 PCI-graphic cards in the same PC and make the mesh player to send left data to one card and right data to the other?
Any other suggestion?
(I like polarized glasses but I need a silver non-depolarizing screen to make them work - I was thinking about putting in front of the two LCD projectors just one shutterglasses len each one and wearing another pair of shutterglasses syncronized to the first one).
Giorgio.
