HI- New to all of this, but very interested in taking my own anaglyph movie. I'm looking for workable plans for building an adapter for my camcorder (simple mirror type) . And IF it is possible to build one, could the split image be converted to anaglyph in Final cut pro? (I'm using a Mac). My goal is a short retro-style film that is a tribute to Bwana Devil (anaglyph and all) that can be burned on DVD for TV viewing. Thanks in advance!

Another quick post, If the above is not possible and I HAD to go with duel camcorders - what is the best way to set this up and is there a site that outlines a mac setup '2 videos to one anaglyph' type of thing??? Thanks again, I'm really chomping to make this work (cheaply though).

I'm going to tell you how to do something that I STRONGLY recommend you shouldn't do--record your master directly to anaglyph:

Create an enclosed device that looks like this:

|**|********|**|
RED*********CYAN
|**|_________|**|
|\***********\*|
L____________|**|
************|**|
***********CAMLENS

The RED is a Red color gel/filter (glass or plastic) and CYAN is CYAN colored gel/filter.(Glass is usually higher quality, plastic is usually cheaper)
The 1st "\" is a front surfaced mirror.
The 2nd "\" is a half-silvered mirror. this will let 1/2 of the light from the Red side and 1/2 from the right side, combining to full image.
You must make sure the part attached to the lens is light-tight (no leakage). It's best if all internal boundaries are light-tight, but that part is crucial for the half-silver method to work at all. Black coloring is best.
The "L" is just the corner of the box. The "*" is air. Sorry if it isn't exactly aligned in the picture.

Note: this will give you an image that is quite less bright than a normal image (because of the gels/filters). You have to choose to go either WakerGel=MoreLight+MoreGhosting or StrongerGel=LessLight+LessGhosting

Why did I say not to do this? Because you will never be able to use the material fully with the highest quality (unlike Dual Discreet recording), especially for future repurposing. In this instance, I understand it is meant for effect, so it's quite the exception.
BTW, Bwana Devil was originally shot and shown in Polarized format in 1952. Only the 60's/70's rereleases and later videos are Anaglyph.

Other way to shoot this would be the Dual Discreet method (quality depends alot on camcorder calibration and synchronization).
Assuming DV/DVCam/DVCPro camcorders:
Make sure timecodes match. Digitize in L view. Edit, Export Rendered Edits to FinalL, Batch Redigitize R view ("pretending" it's the L view), Export Re-rendered Edits to FinalR.
Make new timeline/project, Import FinalL and FinalR, put on 2 layers.
Apply CYAN color filter effect to FinalR layer(bottom?) and RED color filter effect to FinalL layer (top?), along with 50% opacity on this layer. Render and Export FinalAnaglyph.

HTH,

Scott

Thanks scott, the 'burn it in anaglyph as you go' will give the look I want. I may go theis route for an experiment. Didn't know about BD originally being polarized, I saw it in anaglyph in the 80's at a 3D festival, it stuck in my mind.
I also got an email that the NuView shudder adapter can be used for filming then just seperate the images in Final Cut Pro, (though they were talking about using PC filters???).. I'd like to go with the dual but the sync is the problem... have you worked with the NuView in FCP to convert to anaglyph?
Many thanks for the input.
Best,
BD

AFA De-Interlacing (actually SEPARATING FIELDS) for a NuView, this might help...
It's a little old (Pre OSX) and it's shareware, but MovieTools should work for you:

http://www.mcqpro.com/html/MovieTools.html

Haven't worked but once in FCP (I use AVID-Mac or PC, Premiere-PC, Vegas-PC, AE-both), but my co-worker does all the time. Should be doable.

You could always try putting the red and cyan filters directly in front of your NuView adapter-making alterating fields be tinted red/cyan, then do a deinterlace--blending fields & combining the 2 images into 1. That way, you don't have to create your own lens adapter box, but it does lose resolution.

Dual cams is the most professional solution, but can usually get pricey. If you don't have models that can genlock, maybe a lanc shepherd device would work well enough for your needs...

HTH,

Scott

www.benslens.com.au

Do you know if the red/blue gels are built in? That would work pretty good for this project, easy editing. Not much info on the site for camcorder use though. I'll have to look into it more... anyone else ever used this with a Camcorder?

Many Thanks,
BD

Hi BD,
I can`t say anything about benslens. I only saw, that anybody use this system for video. Search in this general 3d discussion board for "benslens". Then you will find the link.

Sounds like a premade version of exactly what I was talking about. :)

Thank you both for the tips. I'll post my progress in the future.
