I am trying to view vrml worlds in stereo using the cortona viewer from www.parallelgraphics.com.

I have an NVIDIA Quadro 4 980 XGL graphics card and some old stereographics stereo eyes glasses.

I first of all just installed the nvidia driver 53.03 without the additional stereo driver and went into the display properties and selected the following settings:-

Quadro 4 980 XGL settings.....Performance and Quality settings.....Open GL settings....Additional Open GL properties....
Stereo.....
Enable stereo in Open GL = ticked
Stereo Display mode = Use on-board DIN connector

When I enter full screen mode for the Cortona viewer with OpenGL rendering mode selected the emitter comes on, however the screen does not display a stereo image. There are no other settings in the graphics card driver settings to do with stereo. Is there some way I can change the registry so that there is an option to select page flipping?

Next I tried installing a later version of the NVIDIA graphics card driver 61.77 as well as the NVIDIA stereo driver 61.77. In the Display properties I selected the following settings.....

I selected the same settings as above for the Performance and Quality settings.

For the new stereo settings I selected the following....

Stereo Properties.....

Stereo Enable mode = Enabled
Stereo type = Direct 3 Pin vesa connect

I then tried the Cortona viewer again in full screen mode with the Open GL renderer selected. The emitter didn't come on and the screen wouldn't display a stereo image.

I then changed the renderer in Cortona to Direct X mode and found that the screen was displaying a stereo image, however the emitter would now not come on so I could view this stereo image with the shutter glasses.

After trying some vrml worlds and leaving them for a while I found that if I entered full screen mode with the direct x rendering mode occasionally after anywhere between 10 and 20 minutes the emitter would suddenly come on and I would be able to view the vrml world in stereo. However, this didn't work every time, and most of the time it wouldn't come on at all.
I can't understand why sometimes it will come on but only after a long wait and most of the time not at all. Then I tried another vrml world and it seems to work every time, however it doeesn't with most.

Does any body know if there is any VRML code that you can write into a program to ensure that stereo mode is on???

I don't think the emitter is at fault as the glasses seem to work with another program called TGS3 Space Assistant which uses OpenGL. The emitter comes on straight away.

Therefore I thought it could be a problem with Direct X. I have made sure I have the latest version of Direct X installed but I still have the same problem.

Could it possibly be my PC that is causing the problem. I have a pentium 4 1.5mz with 750mb of ram. My motherboard is only 4x and my grahics card is 8x, although it is supposed to be backwards comaptible. Could this be causing a problem???

Have tried loads of different settings and versions of the drivers but can't seem to get it to work with COrtona. I can either get the emitter working in Open GL rendering mode or the page displaying a stereo image but no emitter working in direct x mode, allthough it does come on sometimes if you wait for about 20 minutes???

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Pete

The quadro opengl stereo driver and the stereo consumer driver should not be installed (be active)
at the same time(see other postings on this site).
If you use the quadro opengl stereo driver ,it is the application that triggers the stereo mode (see other postings on this site) .

Thanks, I have read through the other posts... I have also noticed the compatibility problems with the two drivers.

The problem is with the consumer stereo driver disabled when I try to run Cortona in full screen mode with open gl rendering option selected the emitter will come on but the page wont display the stereo image. It won't swith between the left and right eye views. The only options on the driver settings are to enable stereo in open gl and to slect the stereo display mode which I have selected as 'use on board DIN connecter'. if I try the cortona renderer in direct x mode neither the page displays a stereo image or the emitter comes on.

If I enable the consumer stereo and disable stereo in open gl from the performance and quality settings when I run Cortona in full screen direct x rendering mode the screen always displays a stereo image however the emitter doesn't usually come on. Allthough it does on rare occasions and sometimes it just suddenly comes on if you leave it for ages.

Thanks

At the bottom of this page http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/~hermann/vrml/stereo.html

it says " In the case of Cortona, you need a card with DirectX support to render in stereo."

I tried in the past to get this working but did not succeed.

Please let me know if you solve the problem.

It seems to say that Cortona uses the NVidia 'Games' driver rather than quad-buffered OpenGL.

Thanks for your help.

Yes it appears that Cortona requires the consumer stereo driver for the stereo mode to run.

With the stereo driver installed I am getting the compatability problems between the quadro and the consumer stereo driver. I nearly had it working and the screen displays a stereo image , however the emitter comes on rarely.

I assume that it must be this compatability issue causing the problem and until NVIDIA solve the problem I can't see Cortona working in stereo mode.

Remember, your monitor refresh-rate needs to be at least 120Hz at the resolution you are using.
As previously suggested, disable OpenGL stereo.

I have downloaded latest Cortona and will try it on Thursday on my WinME partition (which does not support stereo OpenGL).
