hello, I'm new to the community and I have a few questions that I can't seem to find answered anywhere.

regarding HMDs, I'm keenly interested in the resolution. most games I play I run at a minimum of 1024x768. most HMDs, however, advertise a maximum of 800x600. This is the one thing that has seriously prevented me from making an investment in a HMD. But when I was researching the other day I found that according to one site the VFX3D advertised with a monoscopic resolution of 1600x1200(http://www.cwonline.com/store/view_product.asp?Product=1147) while at another it was listed as only having "789x480x2" (http://www.iitvr.com/displays.html) and although I can't remember where I saw it, I'm pretty sure I found a website with the resolution clocked at 640x480x3.

so, here's my question. does 640x480x3 translate into something around 1024x768? cause if it does, I think I've found my newest toy.

anyways, I have more questions as well, but if I can get the answer to this one, I'd be happy.

The 640x480x3 means that its 640x480 resolution but it takes 3 pixels to make one actual pixel. Thus your resolution is about 1/3 of the stated 640x480. It's a marketing ploy to make the resolution look better then it is.

ahh. that makes sense.

okay then, are there any HMDs out there that'll do 1024x768 and are still under $10,000? I'm guessing not, but I'll field the question anyways.

No unfortunately not. If you have a CRT monitor capable of 120Hz refresh at 1024x768 and an Nvidia card (the newer the better)you can experience some pretty immersive stereoscopic gameplay. There are some companys advertising stereoscopic drivers for an LCD and ATI card but several of us here have tried them and were very unimpressed. There are some that have coupled shutter glasses with a Fresnel lens and a TrackIR to increase the level of immersion.
Despite the opinion of some there have been some advances in OLED technology that may provide an affordable 1024x768 HMD within the next year and a half.
