I hope not to be OT here.
I've just been informed that we (in an italian university lab) have the budget (not large) for a new video card for my PC.
I should suggest brand & model, and since I haven't checked news for a while I'd need advice.

My current configuration is:
- Asus2V1D dual head GeForce2 MX
- CRT monitor
- autostereo DTI 2015XLS TFT LCD

I need:
- dual monitor support
- stereo support (at least in "clone" mode, working on the DTI monitor)
- stereo OpenGL (I use an application built with the OpenGL-based VTK libraries)

I've seen, in a quick google-search, a promising
"HP NVIDIA Quadro4 100 NVS" that seems to have what I need for a good price. Anyone can tell me something good/bad about this card, or maybe suggest something else?

The Quadro4 is an overpriced Geforce4. I had even flashed my G4 BIOS with the Q4 BIOS and had all the Q4 functionality. Everything on the market is dual head now. I read a review at either tomshardware.com or anandtech.com about that monitor and they were using a G4 4600ti with the 45.23 detonator and stereo drivers. They were very impressed. I think I would choose Nvidia over ATI in your case just because of the OEM stereo drivers.

Are you certain?
what about the device i.d.,the "anti hacking " code in the nvidia drivers, the hardware overlays in the qadro4? even softquadro latest version does not work correctly with the detonator 4x and above.

Look here:
http://www20.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/vga-charts-03.html#unreal_tournament_2003

The higher cards dont look too much better than the less expensive ones there, but whne qualty settings are enabled, such as Full Screen antialiasing and anisotropic filtering, the difference can be 4x+

Here are the charts with them enabled:

Note however, that GFFX cards will not allow FSAA in stereo.

If you will not be using stereo applications, ATi is the best route to go for the price and performance.

"Note however, that GFFX cards will not allow FSAA in stereo"

mine does just fine RAGE. fx5600 to be exact, and i'm able to use ALL modes of FSAA, 2x, quincunx, 4x, (also 4XS and 6XS in D3D.) i also use 8x anisotropic filtering.

sure, granted i have 2GB of pc2700 ddr, so i'm able to use it and still get awesome framerates and such. obviously my system can handle this, i know alot of pc's can't. anyhow just thought i'd share. good day.

I was referring to when in stereo.

I too have 1GB DDR333, 2400+, with Ti4600. I have no problems out of stereo at any or those settings unless also utilising a hgh resolution.

Most stereo gamers i have talked to have experienced a problem where when in stereo with any kind of FSAA, the left eye image freezes, while the right eye image continues. This occurrs with anything above the 30.87 drivers. Since FX cards cannot use 30.87, it is assumed that this is a problem with all the cards.

Good for you if it works :)

Yeah sorry, I meant to note that FSAA and AF work fine with the stereo enabled. :)
