Bingo. It works :-) Tried it on a CRT TV, from an XBox. It looks just like a stand-alone DVD player playback to me... and I used a DVD+RW. It totally blew my son's mind, and he's hard to impress (you know, those gamers ;-) ;-) ;-). Still, the big question... what does it look like on an LCD, plasma, etc...? My SVCD didn't play on the XBox, it's on a CD-RW, BTW. I don't know what the deal is with that... Still looking for a Mac MPEG 2 player... a free one, preferably ;-) Also, I've put the conversion instructions on my "VirtualDub3D" page. VLC media player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html Open source freeware with complete binaries for Windows, Mac OSX, BeOS, Debian GNU/Linux, Mandrake Linux, Red Hat Linux, Familiar Linux, YOPY/Linupy, Zaurus, and build your own for NetBSD, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Solaris, QNX and Gentoo Linux. I played the interlaced anaglyph SVCD from the CD-Rom. Both "bob" and "blend" deinterlace options work great, although my Mac isn't fast enough for the "bob" option. (*old* 600 MHz iMac :-) Strange... bobbing it in this media player looks like page-flipping. Huh? I'm downloading the PC version :-) PKK | ||

Since the field lines don't show any color bleed, whatsoever, the actual MPEG itself won't ever cause ghosting. If there is any reason for ghosting, it has something to do with something else, like monitor refresh or something. Anaglyphs, by nature, might show a bit more ghosting than field sequential 3D with shutterglasses, no matter what... but this interlaced 3D technique is _as good_ as any anaglyph can be, as far as ghosting goes, i.e., it shows the exact same amount of ghosting as an on-the-fly anaglyph conversion of a stereo pair... or an uncompressed (or lossless) conversion of the same. So... the amount of ghosting will depend on the method of displaying the interlaced anaglyph, and the monitor type, etc. As I have mentioned, page flipping is really impressive, as you don't lose any image brightness, even from the interlaced anaglyph source. BTW, even with this very fast PC, I am not able to bob the "LVC Media Player" without flicker, so that apparently won't work... the "blend" option, oddly enough, seems to work, but you'll have to brighten up your monitor settings, or the image might be a bit dark. Just so I'm comparing a apples to apples, here ;-)... I just rechecked this, today, on the 600 MHz iMac, to make sure I wasn't jumping to conclusions, and the VLC Media Player set to "blend" looks as good as shutterglasses to me. My son likes it better than shutterglasses for some reason. There is no flicker at all. What I did was take a commercial field sequential 3D video, did the interlaced anaglyph conversion, and burned an SVCD of it. Even with the recompression and the lower resolution, the image quality is great, and the anaglyph quality is flawless. I don't appear to be dropping any frames directly from the CD-Rom at full screen... wonderful. Oddly, on the Mac, I don't have to brighten the monitor, either (I do on my PC). I want to try this on an LCD screen so bad that I could scream! :-) PKK | ||

No, but, please, please, please... someone go through this exact process and see what you get. Since I am able to do weird things like play an SVCD of one on a Mac with the LVC media player set to "blending" (fields), I'm almost confused as to *why* it is even working at all that way! It seems to me that if that works, then lots of other ways should, too. Some programs are an exception, but in others of them, "weave" works, "bob" works, and "blend" works... you sure can't do that with field sequential 3D and shutterglasses!!! Also, someone with an LCD screen, try it... to answer the same questions... PKK |
