I'm trying to build my own HMD.
Anyone knows about LCDs with a resolution of 1024x768 or superior (or eventually an HMD unit that have these capabilities)?
I asked to some related web sites and the cheapest i've found is around $ 8000 per unit!
Thanks

The trouble with the small high res LCDs is that they all seem to be rather cheap if you buy a 10,000 of them but if you want one or two you can only get "developer's kits" for several thou a pop.

A much cheaper avenue might exist if you are willing to forego stereo - and willing to put up with a somewhat heavy device. I'm thinking of a design like the one Liquid Image used to use - a single, fairly large-ish LCD suspended in front of your face, with viewing optics to make it look like its at infinity (look at the list of HMD vendors on this site). Such large LCDs are sold by distributors for several hundred dollars apiece. You could also buy an LCD monitor with that resolution for less than $400, and take the LCD out, but those might be too large and heavy. The smallest inexpensive 1024X768 LCD I found with a quick look was an NEC 10.4" model.
For a list of LCD specs check out http://www.lcdspecifications.com/nec.html

PS: The link I just provided goes to the NEC section of a larger site. Just use http://www.lcdspecifications.com/ to get to the complete list of manufacturers.

The iglasses svga can use 1024 x 768 in games on my system using an geoforce 4 64 meg card. In Windows, the fonts are corrupted at that resolution, though. Hell, if you cold boot with the iglasses, and check properties, you'll see the resolution can be set up to 1600 x 1200. But I think that would only work for games with a high end graphics card.

'Can u get the FOV up for i-glasses?'

Maybe. I think iglasses uses magnifying mirrors instead of lens, but i'm not real sure. Anyone with guts willing to take apart his iglasses for a peek inside??

Basically the vfx3d has the same display of the old i-glasses.But you have to rearrange it rotated by 90 degrees because you have to take apart the mirrors.I don't know if it's the same
for the new i-glasses though.

About the hires LCD, I got some price.
I think it's possible to build an HMD with the same specs of the nvisor SX with about 16000 bucks, using the development kits.I mean 1280x1024 60 degrees FOV.
Still a lot of money.

Mirrors huh? What's the power rating? 2x? I'm going to try to replace them with 3x mirrors.
Now anyone know a good source for hmd parts?

I think it's more easy to find some optic that do the work than to replace the mirrors.
About HMD parts I'm also looking for some other
optic that can magnify more than 15x with a higher FOV than the peak lupe 15x, even at the price of image distortion.
Anyone with a background in that field?
It would be possible to correct the distortion
at software level. We JUST need the source code of the video drivers :p

I think u r crazy to do this, but you might want to checkout edmund scientific's optics catalog for what you need. Also look up the i-glasses patent at us pto gov for the exact dimensions and power of the lenses.

Good luck. I'm contemplating buying one of these things seeing as the price has come down alot. I want to watch winamp plugins in 3d.

For tactile feedback, check out audi-oh

give the address to look up this patent? I dont know what us pto gov is!! Someone find out if the i-glasses use the same setup to the new svga glasses for Dago, so we do what he says should be done... These mirrors you speak of, is that why the svga glasses are blurry around the screen, moving the glasses up or down only makes part of the outside screen clear, now the inside of the screen is sharp but you have to fight with a comfortable position to get the bottom sharp, the top left corner forget it, always blurry for me.. What are the 2 little screens above inside the glasses? Are those the lcd that reflect off the mirrors giving you the 1 screen? What part on the glasses would you want to change, the 2 front peices or the lens behind them or the screen we look at? Maybe im talking garbage but I want to understand what part is which....

ltr..

*** What are the 2 little screens above inside the glasses? Are those the lcd that reflect off the mirrors giving you the 1 screen? ***

From what you say I think they are the same of the old glasses.

For who has not seen it yet check the bottom link 'How to double FOV of the VFX3D' on my web site home page:

I found some good images from the patent.
Try this link first. It shows the dimensions of the mirror and the angles of reflection.

I found the patent link. There are 26 patent hits with i-glasses in the text.

I have taken my glasses apart several times. The lcd's are mounted upside down, then a magnifying mirror does the work. The image is then magnified again by the lenses? The lenses may be the way to go for upping the FOV. Also, the I-glasses are made to be used comfortably w/ glasses. If you had lenses made with say 3x magnification and the proper focal distance wouldn't that work?

I'd like to know if anyone has tried cheap reading/magnification glasses? You can usually get them at the drugstore.

3x is not enough.I think the original magnification of i-glasses (old) is 10x.
If you want to have more FOV you have to go higher of course.

I just made an interesting discovery. The i-Glasses SVGA HMD actually works with horizontal resolutions significantly higher than 800 pixels without digital downscaling.

You can verify this by trying the 1024x768 resolution. The downscaling artifacts are clear along the Y-axis. However, if you take a window and move it from left to right you will notice that there are no scaling artifacts along the X-axis.

As an experiment, I made a few non-standard video modes like:

- 1024x600
- 1280x600
- 1600x600

The 1024x600 mode is crystal clear and there are no digital scaling artifacts. The image does get a little muzzy towards the higher resolutions, which is to be expected. However, text is clearly readable in all modes.

I don't know much about LCoS dispays, but these seem to behave more like a CRT display with regard to the horizontal resolution.

Perhaps this is interesting for those, who are looking for a low-cost solution that could provide higher FOV.

Cheap magnifying glasses will not work. The reason being that the focal distance is like 1 to 1 1/2'. Goes back to my suggestion, if you mounted magnifying lenses with the correct focal distance, (about 1/2", but I'd get better measurements to try it out) couldn't that work? If it did you could mount them into like some scuba goggles, cut the rubber to match i-glasses, voila! immersive w/ higher fov. Another option would be to get some lenses custom cut with a high magnification and replace the lenses inside. The i-glasses magnify twice, once with a concave mirror, again with the lenses. I think the only problem you might run into is distortion with either method.

Im sure it can be done, and with dago at the helm of ripping stuff apart and tinkering with it, I bet he finds a way... It does have a nice picture but if you can get it wider without distortion too much, some of us that don't mind taking the glasses apart after the warrenty runs out might be happy with the results..... You get that baby kickin at 60 FOV.... I know as for HAHA's I tried a 5x magnify glass, as I figured just blurry because the image is to far away like Jared said.. You look at fine print you have to have the mag close to see big letters, keep it away and its blurry, so Jared you said that the lenses also magnify the image too? Do they have lenses that are stronger, how strong are the ones in the glasses?

I found these binocular glasses for $47. They are goggles designed for sporting events. It may work if you can fit the i-glasses over them.
