I can't wait to see projectors based on this but do you think that 5ms response speed is enough for stereo application ?

Could be good for HMDs too? Sony doesn't call it LCoS, but looks like it to me (which is what most current 800x600 HMDs use). Resolution of 1920x1080 would be quite a step up (2 million pixels vs. old HMDs' 180,000) and 16:9 aspect ratio makes for wider FOV. Since LCoS is color sequential, the speed of 5 msec = 200 Hz would divide by 3 for R/G/and B, so 66 cycles/sec (full color) max... which might not be the best for CRTs with stereo glasses, but probably good enough for HMDs. The big question is the cost per display of this SXRD? High price and bulky size made Texas Instruments' DLP technology not so good for HMDs.

They compare it to LCoS and cite differences (i.e., improvements). RTFA! :-)

Like you said, we need to find out its price before we get excited. High price typically results from low yield, yet Sony specifically mentions how high the yield is. This could possibly be good.

If the "dot pitch" (using that term loosely) is kept the same as for an 800x600 HMD, this could more than double the FOV to around 60 degrees while still keeping resolution good enough to easily read text in Windows. I'd pay a thousand bucks for that.

HMD manufacturers: make it happen! You're running out of excuses!

Without a special stereo-interface in the projector it'll hardly work with shutterglasses, because as with LCD's and DLP's you don't have access to the sync.

###HMD manufacturers: make it happen! You're running out of excuses!

Most microdisplays are designed for projectors and the ones suitable for HMD'S are often vaporware.
