Hi all,

I just ordered the I-Glasses SVGA 3D and was wondering if someone would give me a little advice regarding how best to set them up with my system.

I understand that there is an extension for the nVidia drivers that allows you to enable true stereoscopic rendering for supported games. I can't use this though because I have an ATI 9700 Pro video card (which I rather like). I have seen the programs WINx3D and VRCaddy mentioned and the VRCaddy web page says it supports the ATI video cards. My understanding was that the 3D version of the I-Glasses included support for converting pretty much anything into a kind of pseudo 3D by cropping the edges of the image to create the illusion that they are rendered from different points of view. I would really appreciate it if someone would explain the differences, benefits, drawbacks, etc. of using the I-Glasses built in 3D vs. a 3D application liek the ones mentioned.

Hi, I was wondering about the size of image for the I-glasses. How big a screen translated to 2 meters distance? Also, I was wondering if anyone have played Grand theft auto 3/the pc-version with I-glasses or I-visor/cy-visor? And finally: does anyone have new info on the x-viewer, such as size of image for example?

My experience with HMD is no matter what the virtual screen size simulated at 2m, the effect you feel wouldn't beat an actual screen size of 100'. The reason is our mind is hard to trick into believing that the miniture screen in front of you is equivalent to a bigger screen. It is the feel of big screen that can't really simulated on current HMD. Projector is still a way to go if you like big screen movie and gaming. Unless you want 3D viewing. I'm looking into the new Infocus LS 7200 with 1200:1 contrast ratio. This should have a very good colour saturation.

I got my glasses yesterday. I had ordered the unit on the Christmas special from www.vrealities.com last Thursday and was pleased to have them so soon. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try them until today when I played with them for about an hour at lunch. Here's what I think so far...

My first impression was that they were very nicely built. The pictures I'd seen online made them look like they were made from grey plastic but the front portion is mostly metal (magnesium?) and is painted a nice 2-tone metalic grey. I know this doesn't have much bearing on how they work but I was really surprised by how nice they were.

The next thing I noticed was that the image is not quite as large as my 20" CRT (19.5' viewable at around 18" distance). It seems to be about the same as looking at a 15"-17" CRT. So far, I have not found this to be a problem because I tended to focus on the display and forget about my peripheral vision. For gaming, it might be nice if there were some kind of hood or blinders as you can clearly see past the bottom edge of the goggles. This could be a good thing in some cases as non touch typests like myself can still peek at the keyboard when we need to.

When I got everything working, I found the quality of the display was very good. Text was readable and it was pretty easy to configure everything. I started to play JK2 but I just rebuilt my system this weekend and it didn't want to run. I do not feel this problem had anything to do with the HMD.

I'll post some more info after I get to play with them some more.

I just received a pair myself and am generally pleased with them. The only thing that dis-pleases me slightly is the color's seem to be alittle washed out.

Hey Kev, are you the one with your web page? What do you mean the colors seemed alittle washed out?
Please explain alittle more, these glasses handle 16mill colors correct?

Here's another quick update. Sorry I'm not making more progress - been really busy lately with a system rebuild.

I had to reinstall the OS yesterday (the problem was not related to the HMD) but I got the I-Glasses going fairly quickly the second time around. Since I'm using the ATI card, I decided to put them on the second VGA output. All I had to change in the setup was to make the 2nd display a clone of the first running at 800x600 120Hz. Initially, the colors were a little 'washed out' but adjusting them was simple. I set the RGB values to around 65 for both eyes and tried different brightness & contrast settings until I liked the way it looked. Later I plan to use a Home-Theater setup DVD to get the colors, brightness & contrast properly adjusted.

I also got the VirtuaTrack working for the first time today. It seems to work pretty well under windows but was giving me some difficulty in Jedi Knight 2 & Elite Force. In the games, I could tell that the tracker was at least trying to work but it was jumpy and hard to controll. I only got to play with this for about 30 minutes so I don't know that this is a problem with the unit or its drivers. Virtual Realities even sent me an email to see how things were going and gave me some tips on setting up the head-tracker when I mentioned my problems. Currently, I suspect that the problem is either with the way the Quake III engine handles the mouse input or that there is some kind of conflict being generated by the combination of my PS/2 mouse/keyboard and the VirtuaTrack on COM1. I will be trying some different games (non Q3 based) tonight, if these work the the problem must be something unique to Quake. Either way, my next step will probably be to try hooking my mouse & keyboard up to the USB port. Also, I have learned that the VirtuaTrack updates the game port as well as the mouse port. It might be worth checking the game devices in windows and the in game settings to make sure this is not causing any problems.

I have had zero luck getting the virtuatrack to work. I suspect that this is not the fault of the tracker itself, but much more so the driver. I think that mouse emulation was probably a poor choice. The tracker is much more suited to a direct input device. If it acted like an analog joystick it would be much easier to configure. Anyway that's my two cents. So, if you're out there Armand, get your support guys to write a quick direct input driver and we would all be better off. If not, I'll probably just do it myself, but I shouldn't have to. Oh, and if y'all do decide to do it, see if you can include r and u axis emulation for older games.

I have an InterTrax2 and it works great. Yeah it's expensive, but I am impressed by its accuracy. Driver support is good. It works just like a DirectInput HID, so you can have it act as a joystick, mouse, etc. for games that offer flexible support for such additional devices. I got the USB model, which is small & lightweight and a pleasantly minimal solution (no external power supply required - cuts down on all the cabling!).

Head trackers I'm comparing it to, all of which I have, are: the original trackers from Virtual-iO PC i-Glasses and Forte VFX1 - which were extremely jittery - and the RS-232 InterTrax 30, which was nice, but not as solid as the newer InterTrax2.

My InterTrax2 does drift sometimes (rarely - maybe once per hour of use), which is my only complaint about it, but it's not that bad.

I have a virtuatrack from VR, and i'm unable to use it in games like rtcw and Jedi outcast... Does anyone have solution or an alternate driver?

The problem seems to be that the virtuatrack mouse emulation driver uses an absolute tracking system; which most games don't like. I have spoken with Armand and he assured me that they are working on a direct input driver. That will make it much easier to configure for todays games. Until then, you may have a difficult time configuring it for those games.

I've noticed in a previous message that you said you are able to make a driver yourself, did you find time to start writing one ?
Btw, is there any shortcut allowing to switch on and off the tracker while being in a game?

Hey, I just recieved an e-mail from Armand. He says that the driver should be available ASAP, like in a couple of weeks. As far as being able to switch it on and off, I don't think so. You would have to ask VRealities yourself.
