Hi to all, I'm going to buy a new system on which I wanna run stereo 3d realtime stuff only (opengl/directx). Which system would you recommend to buy while facing: - best stereo image quality (from a nvidia geforce 4) - most flexible stereo control panel (like nvidia's 29.80) - fastest system (AMD or Intel?) - stability and reliability (best fitting motherboard and soundcard?) - best driver support (reseller feels responsible and is highly angaged in the stereo3d driver developement) - Which OS (win2k,win98,winxp?) Hi Iris, Regarding the 'new system': It is hard to say which system would be the best since it depends also on the content (professional or non-professional) you wanna run. Nevertheless I'll comment as far as I can. 1) VGA adapters: The image quality on GeForce 4 cards depends on the driver version you're using. The just released 30.82 gave the best quality since 23.11. ATI and 3DLabs will beat the stereo image quality of a Geforce but 3DLabs just started (this year) to support directx 8.x. So you might run into troubles with the new drivers. Also they changed their focused market segment since they were bought by Creative Labs just some month ago. Allthough I think it will be very interesting to watch 3Dlabs next steps I wouldn't buy their products at the moment. If you're developing the applications too run yourself you'll know about all the tricks to have a good quality on most cards. Regarding my own arguments I'd recommend the NVidia Geforce 4 if you wanna buy now. 2) CPU: Untill now I avoided AMD because they were known for many incompatibilities with other components in the past. Especially if you wanna get a reliable system I'd recommend an Intel P4 Maybe somebody with AMD experiences could help with some positive statements and recommendations regarding board and other components 3) Soundcard: I'm pretty happy with the creative soundblaster cards. If it is correctly installed (correct pci slot to avoid IRQ sharing), you won't run into troubles. 4) Motherboard: I'd simply go with one the I850E boards and taking rambus memory for the most speedy solution. I've to say that I didn't try it untill now. In general Asus is a very angaged and reliable company. They also support and sell stereo glasses with their VGA adapters. 5) OS Go with Win2K if possible!!! There are too many driver issues on WinXP until now. best wishes -Thomas Porrmann | ||

I have spend about 1 month testing several HW just to get the answer (as a part of work on comercial software development) Result: P IV 2.5 GHz ... (easy reason , the best) nVida (PNY) Quadro 4 700 XL 750 XL or 900 XL (Wildcat III is faster but with no support for DirectX = low flexibility) ... I850E based motherboard with 1066 Mhz RAMBUS .. (easy reason, the fastest configuration avialable .. | ||

Michael: Isn't the Quadro an OpenGl card dedicated to higend CAD engineering and 3D Design packages? As I understood Iris, she needs a good directx stereo solution too... The only way to have both, directx and opengl stereo, is the nvidia based consumer line. Will those cards run stable with a P4 on I850E? -Thomas Porrmann | ||

Quadro 4 is a GeForce 4 with unbloced functions => both excelen DirectX and OpenGl performance ... I have spend just this week by testing Wildcat VP and Quadro 4 900 XL in ASUS P4T533-C motheboard with P IV at 2.23 GHz and 800 MHz RAMBUS ... Better slution will be: ASUS P4T533 motherboard (more PCI slots + AGP Pro slot for eventual Wildcat) 1066 MHz RAMBUS P IV at 2.5 GHz ... The tests were targeted mainly on usage with Lightpeed Design DepthQ stereo video player, but I have run several OpenGl and DirectX benchmarks as well .. Test results: OpenGl stereoscopy works excelent on both cards .. Standard typical OpenGl is faster on Wildcat VP ... DirectX is faster and more stable on Quadro ... Wildca VP has troube with textur filrate (under both OpenGl and DirectX) No stability problems with Quadro 4, slight stability problems under DirectX with Wildcat VP ... I did not test the DirectX stereoscopy on Quadro 4, but my experiences with Quadro 2 Pro and Quadro DCC shows that it works identical as a normal GeForce in this area ... In the past , my friends had made some testing of Wildcat II 5110 as well ... DirectX does not work on it at all. OpenGl is faster in all aspects than on other mentioned cards (sometimes by raly impresive more) .. | ||
