I've never tried 3D goggles ever. I am however 2 inches away from buying a pair of i-visors.
I fly Falcon 4.0 and have this idea that it will enhance the already highly immersive feeling of this flight simulator.
Question: What do they mean by a 44" screen at 6 feet? Does it mean I will see a large screen 6 feet away surrounded by darkness? Or will the screen go from the extreme left to the extreme right of my field of vision? Will it be better than sitting 2 feet away from my monitor? On my monitor I find some details (especially in the hud) hard to read. Will the i-visors help?

Told you I was a newbie. Anyhow... thank you for your time.

The effect is like the first description: a 44" screen at 6 feet with black edges. Ever have one of those view finder's as a kid? Well the experience is very similar.

The i-visor has a 31.2 degree field of view, which dictates the amount of left/right black edge you see. The larger the FOV the more closly you get to your second description.

I had the same questions as you until I bought a pair of i-glasses and finally got to see it for myself.

Hope this helps. And if you get the i-visor, please post your oppinion or e-mail me directly. It is very rare to hear from someone that actually owns a pair.

Yes it helps. Actually it is exactly what I needed to know. I would have preferred the truth to be different though.

I don't see anymore how it would enhance the immersive feeling of Falcon 4. I thought it would be like being in the cockpit.

I have to re-think the whole thing to decide whether the other applications of this I-Visor justify the price.

Thanks!

The only reason I bought an HMD was for the 3D effect. Without it, I would not consider purchasing a pair. The 3D affect is great! Plus no flicker unlike shutter glasses.

Of course, the 3D version totally blows the price out of the sky :-(

Just one more thing, even if the fov. is small it seems like the 3d-i 800*600 3D ver.+ a tracking system would be great in sims. and FPS. games any one tried it yet?

Sorry neil one more ??? When you use the 3-d, As far as eye strain, comfort, and amount of time you can ware them is it easyer on the eyes than LCD shutter glasses. one more, did you look into that other brand I can't think of the name right now but almost same specs.800*600 .44 LCD but different brand. Why did you go with the i-glasses. I'm a gamer and like 3-d but the LCD shutter glasses + CRT combo get tiring on the eyes fast, so I was looking at getting a 19" LCD (can,t use LCD shutters with an LCD so no 3-D)or a pair of the i-glasses...I just wanted to get your opinon on your i-glasses before I buy something...Thanks Neil...

To answer your questions:

1. Head Tracker
I bought my pair from Virtual Realities and got the special that came with their own 3DOF head tracker when you buy the i-glasses svga 3d.

The head tracker is supposedly their own invention but housed inside the original i-glasses head tracker casing. It came with a driver disk that I successfully installed under Windows XP. I indeed did get it to work under Windows (i.e. when I move my head, the mouse cursor moves). However, I have yet to make it work correctly in any game. For instance, in No One Lives Forever, I can move the mouse cursor in the introductions but as soon as the game starts it seems like someone is just randomly moving the mouse in all directions, no matter how still I keep my head. I've tried fiddiling with the various tracker settings to no avail.

I believe that with a proper head tracker and 3D enabled, the game can be more immersive. I have found that it really depends on the wearer. By mentally conditioning myself, I can indeed achieve a measure of immersiveness. It also depends on the game. Commanche 4 in 3D is incredible when flying over the landscape. I almost get the feeling of motion, and I suspect that given a properly working head tracker, the feeling would only be intensified.

2. Eye Strain
While I have not had the chance to test my glasses enough (read my post under the topic "My i-glasses 3D svga keeps reversing stereo mode!!" for details), I did indeed notice a big difference from using shutter glasses. When I used shutter glasses, I got a headache in just a couple minutes. However, I never had a problem with the i-glasses. In most games, there is no noticable flicker. With shutter glasses your brain and eyes are being put through the equivalent of a mental wringer. With the i-glasses you ineed have two LCD displays being viewed by each eye at the same moment.

3. i-glasss or cy-visor/i-visor
I chose the i-glasses over the cy-visor/i-visor for one real reason: availability. I the i-visor 3D could not be found. I was told that their was a quality control issue that still needed to be resolved with the cy-visor that was delaying the shipment from the manufacturer. Plus it was $500 more. On the plus side it has a higher FOV, but I decided I could live with the lower FOV. Now if it was 40 degrees or higher, that might have made me reconsider, but for now 5 degrees more just didn't seem worth the extra price.

BTW, If you are considering getting either the i-glasses or cy-visor, I highly recommend getting a GeForce4 card for one reason. It includes two RAMDACS! What this means is that you can have dual monitors running at the same time and at different resolutions/refresh rates. No more resetting resolution and refresh rates in the Windows control panel when you want to switch between the glasses and your monitor!

The head-traker in question works best when worn on the head and can be fine tuned for every game without a problem.

Thank you neil for all the info. And the anonymous above is not me,(I'll sign on as Craig for now on). I'm the one that asked the last few qustions. I have not used a head traker yet, so please let me know how it works out.I think if you can get the 3-D prob. worked out that I would seriously consider getting the i-3D HMD. Realy even without the head traking and 3-D I think I would still enjoy it more than a big LCD or monitor. Would you say your satisfid with it so far? And again thanks for all the information and reply's

Craig: I'll be sure to post more info when I get it back.

Anonymous: I assumed that everyone would know I was wearing it on my head when I tested it out. If you have any suggestions on how to make it work with games, please e-mail me. Thank you.

HI Neil, there is a review of a traking device at simHQ.com . It uses a reflective dot for traking (you can put it on your HMD for head traking or even you finger for hand traking insted of a mouse) and it only cost about $99.00 dollars, go chek the review out and see what you think. The reviewer didnt seem to have problems getting it to work in games. It was more his personal ideas on how he would like it to work in different types of games. He said the sorce code was open so his ideas could see the light of day, chek it out...

That TrackIR device actually sounds interesting. I'm going to keep fiddling with my Virtual Realities Head Tracker, but if that fails, I just may buy the TrackIR.

Thanks for the info Craig!

I just looked at the TrackIR web page and they have some updated drivers for a flight sim, I forgot which one ??? But mybe they'll keep getting better drivers for other games also (FPS..ect.) Keep an eye on them... simHQ.com seems like a good place to go for flight sim info...

Hello Neil,

My problem is, I'm not getting 3d mode working in my i-glasses svga 3d hmd.I may sound stupid, I'm basically new to 3d stuff.I own i-glasses svga 3d hmd and the literature says operate it at about 120 hz frequency, but my windows 98 shows frequency option upto 85 hz only.So how to get it set in 3d mode?Is it that I'll to have attatch this hmd to dongle that comes with shutterglasses, which has a frequency doubler? Please reply, I'll not try it until you reply as I fear if it will damage my hmd.

chetan,

Set your monitor refresh to 60hz before you select 3D1. When set to 60hz, the i-glasses should automatically double the refresh to 120hz. After you have set the refresh rate then select 3D1 to turn on 3D.

Your shutter glasses dongle is not compatible with the i-glasses svga 3d. If you have the 3d version of the i-glasses svga, then it handles the 3D itself by displaying a slightly different view to each eye.

Also, what video card do you have? Are you using the NVIDIA 3D Stereo drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=windows9x)?
